When I lived & wirked in Calif tgey had sushi bars close to my work so I was always stopping on my way back to work after racquetball to pick up lunch. I have tried it all including the octupus..

Where I live now they don't have the japanese restaurants but found that the grocery store in the neighboring town has a sushi bar that they make it boxed up to go. Every time I stop by there I pick up a box & come home & enjoy it immediately. Sushi is not complete without the sinus clearing wasabi & the pickled ginger to ho with it. Ah, it is a treat I don't do often because even there it is expensive but I will treat myself every few months. Their brand of wasabi & the pickled ginger goes with other things too. I just enjoy eating plain shrimp with it too. The joys of living alone, I can eat whatever I want whenever I want it

I didn’t know anything about sushi when I was a kid.

My Korean/Japanese mom made it Korean style by brushing seaweed with sesame oil and roasting it by brushing it on an electric stove coil. Then she salted it. Roasting keeps the seaweed from turning into electrical tape you can’t bite through.

Then she spread it with rice, placed yellow Korean pickle inside, and rolled it up. Never sliced.

I didn’t like Korean pickles, so she put cheese in mine
Thanks for this!

I just ate some for supper. It was tasty but, not quite thawed well enough.
Guess that means I'm going to use a different thawing method next time.

I used to crave it a lot, but mysteriously lost my appetite for it.

Haven't had it in years cause I was spoiled by the authentic sushi I used to have and all I can get now is grocery store stuff. But I love the pickled ginger.

I recently read an article about a guy who got tapeworms from eating sushi. Appartently eating uncooked salmon has the potential to transmit the parasite:

The salmon in sushi is usually smoked. I have had some topped with raw salmon though at a restaurant. It was incredible and made me high like I was smoking weed. It was funny.

Never tried it. And now that I've read this whole thread I don't think I ever will. A few audible "ewwws" came out of my mouth.

You can get two or three different kinds that just have vegetables in them.

Indeed, with carrots and cucumber instead of crab, fish or mollusk.

I enjoy nigiri.

Raw fish over rice, no seaweed involved (that I know of). You can also get it with cooked shrimp over rice.

So good.

But I do like sushi too. I like it if there's avocado in the roll. I don't like it when there's mayo or cream cheese.

Not really a fan of wasabi or the ginger....

I like bento boxes.

You guys ever had a poké bowl (ingredients of sushi but mixed together like a rice bowl)? Or a sushi burrito (a sushi roll on the scale of a burrito)? I've tried the poké bowl, it was a bit overwhelming to me....

I never tried anything other than just sushi rolls with ginger, wasabi and soy sauce. It's good with sriracha sauce too.
Mollusks are disgusting creatures. I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole.

I find the shy and intelligent octopus to be a very intriguing species. Yes, octipi are actually a member of the mollusk family. They just lost any external shell in there evolutionary history. Did you know that a female octopus is the ultimate mom? She abandons the act of hunting, devoting all her time to protecting and tending to her eggs, only to starve herself into a state of exhaustion that, once her eggs hatch, she'll die from? Some sacrifice, eh? FYI, the males die soon after breeding for the first and only time.

It's this reason octipi aren't more evolved socially, what with their capacity to learn and all. Without the ability to pass down what they've learned to the next generation, they can't create communities, build on previous generations' knowledge or even create cohesive family units.

Sorry, I went on a bit of a tangent. I'm such an animal nerd.

I just mean that mollusks are disgusting to eat. I'm actually quite fascinated with octopi, squid and cuttlefish. I could go on and on about the giant squid, colossal squid and Humboldt squid and their abilities to eat people alive. I love sea monsters.

Has a squid actually eaten a man alive? I know that humboldt squid are particularly aggressive and can indeed, maim and kill humans, but consume them alive?

Yes. During fishing frenzies out in the Gulf of Mexico when the Humboldt squid panic they totally flip out and tear apart anyone who is unfortunate enough to fall overboard and some are dragged into the depths and eaten.
They are considered to be more vicious than sharks when agitated or frightened.

Wow...no wonder they are known as Diablo Rojo, or Red Devil, by Hispanic fishermen. Well, that and they are known to become bright vivid red when agitated.

Very good. You have the potential to grasp the horror and fascination and power of the creature.

Did you know that the suckers on the tentacles are serrated with a type of ringed blades that dig into and shred their prey.
The Giant Squid has these same type of serrated rings and the Colossal Squid has these as well as swiveling hook-shaped claws in the center of each sucker.
And then there is the beak to deal with.
It is like a razor sharp, inverted parrot's beak and the radula shreds bitten off chunks of meat to pulp.
They eat very quickly. It is pretty much like a living meat grinder.
Have you ever read "Beast" by Peter Benchley?
