Hmph. I won't be watching that show! I get picky when there are such discrepancies on shows or in movies.

The words "weep" and "wept" in place of "cry" or "cried." I know there's a technical difference. Supposedly "weeping" is silent, while "crying" involves at least a little bit of noise. Still, I guess those words feel outdated and pretentious.

Hmm. “Weep” means ‘to cry’ and “wept” is past tense (and past participle) of weep, so... neither is indicative of any sound.

Do you have a source that indicates sound for cry or crying?

Let me check my OED...

“Shed tears” — weep

“Past and past participle of weep” — wept

1. “Shed tears” or 2. “Shout” — cry

“Cried” — past or past participle of cry

So I can weep silently or shout out my feed for tuppence a bag!

And the main characters have beachfront properties — in Miami.

I watched Snowden for the first time tonight. There is a scene in a Hong Kong hotel where there’s a laptop that reads “MacBook Pro” and then it doesn’t and it doesn’t 5-6 times until the final shot and it reads “MacBook Pro” again. Such a horrible film! And the end is like a reverse “Close Encounters...” with Snowden walking into the light with a heavenly smile on his face.

I don’t think that Snowden is on the fast track to Criterion.

Now that Russia is no long an adversary maybe we can finally grab Snowden. We give up NATO, we get Snowden. And we’ll set up Times Square just as described in The Public Burning. If it’s good enough for the Rosenbergs’...

No, I will use weep and wept at times. But, if I write, “I cried like a baby,” I mean to indicate sound accompanying tears.

I don’t find the words archaic or high-fallutin’ at all!

That's kind of sad, I think. I do understand what you mean and I don't think "weep" or "wept" should be overused. But they are wonderfully descriptive words.

I remember being little and seeing massive cracks in the dirt from a super hot day and being super weirded out by it. I don't know why either.

How about grown adults in their 30's and 40's and beyond, who still call their parents Mommy and Daddy? And/or call their siblings Bubby and Sissy? Or married couples who call each *other* Mommy and Daddy? Hope I'm not stepping on any toes here.
Thanks for this!

I don’t know. I’ve had experiences with the birthday one. Some women was talking about her birthday that was in August. In January. I just don’t understand it.

I don’t really understand your response. Was my comment innapropriate? I tend to anger people on this site. I’m sorry if it did.

You didn't anger me. I was hoping *I* wouldn't anger anybody, because sometimes I do too.

Explanation: I was once married to a man whose sister used to call and leave messages, "Hey, Bubby. This is Sissy...." in this little baby-sounding voice. He was in his early 40's, she was in her mid 30's, and it sounded creepy to me.

Agreed! While I recognize birthdays, anniversaries, etc., expecting evermore gaiety on those dates is, um, weird. Personally, I think that the last birthday with parties, wampeters, foma and granfalloons should be the 9th, really.

Or as soon as a child realizes (or is told) that there is no Santa Claus. I believe that my most uncomfortable times with my dad were when we both knew that the other was lying about St. Nick.

Creepy.

Relatedly, both BF and I are weirded out over people calling each other "baby".

Yeah, now there's stepping on some toes! It's super common. That doesn't keep it from weirding us out though...

We call each other "hon" though, which I'm sure bothers others, so...

Young women of any size wearing shorts with their bottoms hanging out. Yeah, I wonder why would they do that? Are they aware of it? It is weird to me.

I called my wife — and only my wife — ‘sweetie’ or ‘sweet thing’ or ‘sweetheart’ most of the time. And we were still touching one another publicly, but inconspicuously, one month before our divorce was final.

With that confession, I admit to finding ‘baby’ disturbing, as well, with ‘babe’ reminding me of the film with the pig.
