how likely are you to be affected by the winter cold?

with winter here now for most of us I just thought I'd post the question.

actually, I am very unlikely to get a cold- at the minimum, probably a small annoying cough

and it's always been that way too... during winter it seems that everyone I know goes down with nasty colds, and I'm fine.

one of my strong points

It depends on how bad the flu season is. I usually go 1.5 years between getting colds. But last flu season I got sick 4 times with a cold. Twice kind of badly. Stress about getting the flu played a big part in it for me.

I tend not to get them. Which is amazing since I take public transportation every day. I attribute it to vitamin D which I take when it gets cold.

They say this season is going to be really bad and I plan to go get a flu shot. I got so sick last season I tore tissue inside my chest from coughing!

I love the winter. I love the snow, and I love Christmas.

The fact that I get colds each time a new season starts and the fact I'm not good with cold air prevents me from enjoying it. Such a shame, because I just love the idea of staying home and drinking hot drinks.

Thanks for the info. I didn’t know that. Last flu season terrified me.

I have only had bronchitis twice in the last 11 years. When I lived in Calif I got it every year.

Don't get colds & refuse to get a flu shot. I don't take antibiotics unless I am really sick & my own immune system isn't able to fight off the bacteria.

Interesting because ehen my stress level went down so did my getting sick. They say our immune system is effected by our stress level. Guess my experience is in agreement with that.

When I lived in the North, I came down with a really bad case of bronchitis in the winter. It took a month to get better. I couldn't keep food down for a while, and it didn't get better until I took antibiotics.

I haven't been that sick since moving to Texas. We don't really have winter here. Although a couple of weeks ago I did have a cold with a low-grade fever.

I usually get about 2 colds per autumn/winter season. I almost always get one mid - February.
This year I plan to walk outside for 30min every day, in every weather (rain, snow). It should strengthen the immune system so I wonder how my body reacts to that.

In the past 25 I have gotten one cold about every 24 months. Then about four years ago, I had bronchitis five times in a year and a half. In the midst of all the coughing, I started reading about taking an iodine supplement. I have been sick only once in the past two years, and my energy level is much better. I have used both Lugols iodine (drops), and Lugotabs (tablets).
Thanks for this!

It depends. I'm likely to get a cold. I live with kids and work around kids. They don't typically last very long. Bronchitis I have not had since college days. I do get the flu shot. I try to stay away from hospitals, actually my last neuro banned me from er visits because of my own immune system. I brought home a staph infection and the flu after coming home from the hospital with my youngest.
I cannot recall the last time I needed medical clearance to return to work. A day or two home from work from a cold is perhaps the usual for me. Depends on how run down I feel from it.

It's September. Where on earth is that a winter month? And for most of us?

I'm actually really confused.

I'm not sure. It seems that I get sick more often these days, I think b/c I'm a little more isolated (I'm not around enough germs to build up immunity, so when something hits, it hits hard - maybe?)

I had that terrible flu last year - and I'm still upset about it. There was a "color analyst" traveling to my town (!) in January who I had booked a session with, to find out what colors best flatter my skin. I was so excited! And, then I got the flu, and had to cancel. I thought about trying to go see her anyway (I had emailed her, and she was OK with me coming sick) - but it's a long process, sitting under lights, staring at your face in the mirror... and I was so miserable. I certainly didn't want to look at myself, with my puffy eyes, red nose, etc!

But SeekerofLife - I want to hear more about this iodine thing! I'm going to google it, but wow! Thanks for mentioning it... that sounds really helpful. Are there any risks (i.e. any risk of getting too much iodine)?

Several years ago, I had some weird skin thing... an "eruption" (maybe two, if I remember right) - that was scary and looked different than anything else that I'd ever seen my skin do. I saw advice online that iodine could be used for something similar, so I tried it - and amazingly, it worked! No scars, I can't even remember where they were now. It was hard, b/c I ended up with iodine on my clothes, and the smell lingered for quite a long time... but I was so excited and grateful to fix the problem (without a doctor's visit). And, no pain either! Win!

So.... the thought that iodine might help with other stuff on the inside doesn't seem totally surprising. And my energy levels are generally crappy, so bonus if it helps that too. *hmmm* - thanks!
