Cool thread! While I don't collect rocks, I have 2 worry stones. One, a black onyx, I think, is my favorite. Stones are so peaceful too look at and touch. Especially smooth ones. They're also fun for rock skipping on lakes and whatnot. I like stones on a beach. Like instead of sand. I have actually never been to a beach like that. I want to though!

I had a worry stone made of moss agate and I loved it so much but I lost it and it was never seen again, I turned my apartment inside out and upside down multiple times and after about a year finally gave up and accepted that it was gone.

I ordered it online so I could get another one sometime which I'd like to.

Very cool! I don't collect them either, but I do like rocks/stones, and have a couple small ones scattered around the house. I find them calming/grounding too - I like the "solid" feeling!

We have quite the collection of stone animals at our house. My Dad's been collecting them for years. I love collecting quartzy stones to put in my planters, too. They look so lovely next to my plants.

I have some gemstones, crystals and geodes. Also have some just plain rocks. Years ago my dad and I started bringing each other rocks from our travels. They weren't anything special, just something we saw that we thought the other would like. He's been gone 20+ years now. We had a rocky relationship. I have the rocks displayed in my yard. They bring me memories of something positive we shared.

My patents would always bring rocks home from every place we visited. Lol....some were huge. I did find a piece of petrified wood in the mojave desert when just walking around one time with my parents.

When my grandparents lived in Topeka their neighbor was a school teacher. She knew a place around there to find fossils. Brought me several really good sea lilly fossels (crinoids) where I live now in Ky there are many arrowheads to be found around. I have a couple. Also my farm has tons of limestone rocks & I have sern some shell fossils in those rocks.

I actually had a rock collection growing up & had many I bought from rock stores usually in the desert area of calif or at touristy areas.

Most of them, yes. A few are gifts from children. I belong to a wonderfully active "Kindness Rocks" group in my town. We even have a fairy door!

What's a "Kindness Rock" group?

Medusax, how about checking for a rock collecting group in your area? And remember we are scattered all over the place.

Kindness Rocks has a long and wonderful story about how the movement began. But to put it succinctly, someone paints a rock that helps to cheer the finder's day. That can be an image, words, both...anything inspiring. The artist hides the rock in plain view, anywhere...any public place. Sooner or later (usually sooner) someone comes along and finds the rock. The finder can either keep the rock or rehide it.

Many Kindness Rock groups have a Facebook page so people can post pictures of rocks they've painted, and of found rocks. It's an especially delightful activity for children - gets them outside placing rocks they've painted and searching for rocks. And of course, when they see a rock they've painted posted on Facebook, it's very exciting!

I started a "fairy door" in my town, which is a little place beneath a tree (in our case, on the library grounds). It's been *mysteriously* decorated by members of the group. The fairy door is a rock-hiding place where a person can always find a rock....kind of a place of perpetual inspiration. AND we're having a rock painting party later this month...an autumn/Halloween theme.

So. There you have it .

@Blue_Bird

And if you ever get the chance, add a meteorite to your collection as well. You can easily learn how to identify them or you can even buy them. They're fascinating - visitors from beyond space and time :-) Good luck with your collection.

I don't collect them but I do like geology and rocks/stones /minerals. I especially like interesting shapes and structures (more than colors). My geology teacher once said that it's a cultural thing - people in the West tend to value colors, in traditional China and Japan they valued shapes.
Not sure if it's true but I find it interesting :-)

I have a rock collection, though I never thought of my rocks as a collection lol. For as far back as I can recall, I've loved rocks. Whenever I see one (or more) that strikes my fancy, I pick it up and put it in my pocket. When I get home I wash them and put them on the kitchen window sill. When I need to make room for more I'll either put them in with a potted plant or in one of the dishes of rocks I have about my apartment. I love the diversity of colors, textures, shapes and sizes that rocks have, they're so interesting and beautiful. And they're everywhere you go. You never know where you'll happen upon a rock to treasure.

I've never thought about that, that's a really good idea!

I love rocks! 😁
My wife and I have gone hunting for cool rocks and fossils several times. We found a whole intact brochiopod in June. It's a fun hobby!
If you're interested, you can purchase a small stone polishing machine fairly inexpensively. It can be fun just to see what happens sometimes! Note though, they can be very noisy! And they do have to run an extended period of time.
Silly fun - i took the stone turtle who lives on my desk AND another stone turtle from another desk on a fossil hunt and shared pictures. 🤣

When i read this my mind wandered ( as it often does) and i thought of Rocky in 'the rocky horror show' . At one point Frank'n'Furter introduces his 'creation' Rocky to Brad and janet and Riff Raff says ' Yeah so named for the rocks in his head.' Ha Ha. I feel like i've been collecting rocks in my head all my life. And it feels like my thoughts keep hitting up against 'em.

So yeah i have a rock collection. In my head.

I don't like the whole spiritual Philosophy around this, but purely from your own experience, do you guys feel that some rocks may have some kind of energy?
