In fact, one of the actresses who has been a staple of the MCU for years as a strong character actually is rumored to have complained. I would recommend you view Aliens for an amazing Sigourney Weaver. Or if Sci Fi doesn't work - Working Girl.

But I don't want to get into super hero movies as a marker of womanhood. Truly it has nothing to do with it. One reason the men were complaining. Trying to sell a johnny come lately super hero as some marker to feminist empowerment is, and should be, insulting to everyone and just a despicable marketing strategy.

Real woman are so much more than that.

My father (now deceased) loved the Aliens films. It was a series of 2 or 3, do I have that right? He always said that Weaver was a great actress. I will have to check them out. I can go in and out of sci-fi depending on how it's done, my mood etc. I saw Working Girl a very, very long time ago. I'd have to refresh my memory on that one.

I haven't heard that talk in my predominantly male household nor through overhearing their friends talk like that thankfully.

Most of the men that I've ever met that were into this genre love the idea of a bad@$$ woman.

I think the "issue" around Captain Marvel was that in the original comic..Captain Marvel was a man. That's the only known controversy.

Other than some reviewers--not official reviewers but within social circles is that it was sort of lackluster and drawn out. At the same time it's character development leading up to the much anticipated End Game in May

There was a controversy at my local theatre. An innovative artistic director decided to have some (not all) performances of A Christmas Carol played by a female Scrooge. Unfortunately, I didn't find out until after the fact but one of the staff I became friendly with informed me that they received a lot of complaints. Yes, Dickens wrote Scrooge as a male but it's art, right? What's wrong with switching to a female role for a few performances to shake things up? I wrote to the artistic director and commended him for taking a chance and said I'd love the opportunity to witness a female Scrooge if they were ever willing to try again.

Not without having seen in its entirety, film by film the entire Marvel series starting in 2008. There's a story line.

It's an ok movie by itself. But I don't think you'll find what you are hoping to find from it by seeing this film.

No, i remember my father watching them but it's not a genre I tend to choose. Though they seem to have such a following I am now curious about them

Got it I actually enjoyed watching Weaver in Ghostbusters. I know it's a silly film but it still makes me smile all these years later.

That was cute when it came out in the movies. I wasn't completely censored from watching scarier movies growing up. I had friends with older siblings and we lived near a drive in theatre and cable came out. I was in grade school in the 80s.

I saw Jaws when I was too young! I couldn't go swimming or take a bath for months! As an adult, I think it's a classic (except the misrepresentation of sharks has really damaged the species) but as a child it really freaked me out. Haha! Now, my favorite part is when the guys are out on the boat getting drunk and exchanging their red badges of courage. Something very authentic about those scenes. I get a kick out of Quint

I saw these things "too young" myself, at the same time so didn't my friends. So we'd actually go outside and talk about the fact that these things weren't real and go build forts and collect frogs from the pond area or whatever have you.
I never bothered to delve too deep into whether sharks were misrepresented. Sharks don't spend much time in the colder ocean climates where we'd go to the beach.
When do consider that movie now, I view it from a New Englanders perspective that it was a rarity and of course there was panic in the movie.

I mentioned because I love sharks and fully support efforts to educate the public on their reality and to end the brutal practice of finning etc. Sharks do not prey on humans. There is plenty of research confirming that. The number of shark bites is very low. Death by shark attack is even lower. When a human is in a shark's environment, there is of course a risk that they could be bitten. How does a creature without arms or hands investigate something unfamiliar? With it's head and mouth. You can see this when they chum the water around the shark-cages. The shark isn't trying to eat the human (for one thing they don't like how we taste) but is trying to figure out what is in front of it or even prodding it (that's asking for trouble). Several people involved in the making of Jaws later realized (after talking with shark experts) that they created a big problem for sharks. There's at least one man who travels around intentionally killing great whites because he thinks he's doing the world a favor. He is very misguided but will not listen to reason. Sharks are a very important species in the ocean. If they die out, that's not good for several reasons. If anyone is interested, the research is out there. That said, I realize that Jaws was not created with the intention of damaging shark populations. It was a very clever and novel approach to horror film. But unfortunately our poor sharks have suffered greatly as a result.

I didn't watch it myself so I can't comment on how it was. But it's an episodic play that explores various topics, such as consensual and non-consensual sexual experiences, genital mutilation, body image, sex work, etc. It has been both praised and criticized by different critics.
