I have 2 daughters, ages 13 and 17 and am looking for recommendations for movies we can rent and enjoy together. It seems they have often seen the latest films, so recommendations from "further back" are welcome too. They like comedies, romances, horror, and also some serious movies too.

Recently we have watched these movies and enjoyed them: Mulitplicity, Say Anything, Mystic Pizza, Rosemary's Baby, and Days of Heaven. They loved Days of Heaven, which surprised me as it is quite serious, but I was pleased because it is my favorite movie of all time. I was even wondering if they might like Lawrence of Arabia.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking they might like The Fly with Jeff Goldblum, so may try to rent that this week.

Lawrence of Arabia tests the patience of some young people but then again, it's such a great film and the cinematography is so compelling, maybe they'd dig it.

The Fly. A David Cronenberg classic. Thumbs up on this one.

Yoda's list is brilliant so I second those nominations.

Here's a few more:

The Thing

The Shining

Harold & Maude

Heathers

Cabaret

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

City Of God

Wings Of Desire

Chinatown

Lonestar

Miller's Crossing

Rain Man

High Noon

Life Is Beautiful

The Exorcist

Casablanca

LA Confidential

Misery

And of course, Cyrano de Bergerac (French version starring Gerard Depardieu, 1990).

So those were the first titles that came to mind. And really, I can do this all day. But what I most recommend is renting them with your kids (if that's an option). I always enjoy picking movies with my kids.

I'm 17, and some movies I suggest:

10 Things I Hate About You
The Devil Wears Prada (it's pretty recent though)
Monster in Law
While You Were Sleeping
The Princess Bride (someone else suggested that too)

Oh, 10 Things I Hate about You; I love that one and While You Were Sleeping is "Christmas" related too. Good thoughts Life!

How about Rat Race, Its a Mad Mad Mad World, Weekend at Bernies, The Craft, The Village, Any of M. Night Shamalan's stuff is good. Stephen King can't go wrong with. The Borrowers is good, The new Halloween with Rob Zombie just came out and it looks good.

Thanks so much for all the great suggestions! I am definitely printing out this thread.

I do like to take my girls to pick out the movies with me, but we often wander around the store, not being able to decide on anything or to know if any of the titles are any good. (I stopped going to movies when I became a mom in 1990.) It will be so useful to have some ideas before we set foot inside the store.

We saw Premonition last night (with Sandra Bullock). My video store doesn't have The Fly. Looking for video recommendations for me & my girls

Hehe Heathers is a must, everyone can enjoy it. I once dated a guy with on IQ of 170 or something, and I was completely astonished when he presented it as his favourite movie of all times.
