I believe my illness sends me a depressive drop so I have an excuse to retreat. It isn't a successful strategy but my mind seems to think so. I would prefer gobs of morphine-based substances but I'm not crazy enough to pursue those sorts of sideshows. I wind up tolerating the discomfort in solitary so to speak and find myself sleeping as much as I can until the cycle passes.

Usually my first go to is to sit down & analyze what I can do to make it less tough. Then talk it over with my supportive friends for other ideas.

Then I distance & do things to distract myself & let my subconscious mind process the thoughts & ideas. Horse back riding or just working around my farm or cleaning the house or painting or playing with my animals are distractions that definitely help.

It depends on how tough. Moderately tough...hopefully it happens when I have some money to spend. I go shopping; see people out and about and get some walking in (while I shop)...buy something nice. I remember to take good, even breaths. I take extra medication. I eat chocolate. Drink espresso. Used to lie in bed and read, but I haven't found a book worth reading in a long time.

When times are rough I spend it with my daughter and partner. Both will help lighten my mood. Make a big pot of tea - not coffee because its caffeine can worsen anxiety. Watch the fire lit with logs, roast chestnuts in a pan over logs, making sure the nut skins are slit first. And do repeats of my breathing exercises. That always helps lighten the mood.

I shut off the phone and potter about in the greenhouse.

Plants don't shout back.
