I was in a Walgreens the other day and noticed they have a sign on the door that they're open Christmas Day. At first I and everyone I talked to thought this was "cruel" but now I'm not so sure. If you didn't have anything else to do, no one to see/family in the area, etc. would you want to have a job where you could work Christmas day? I think it would be kind of pleasant/more normal feeling and give one something to "complain" about instead of not having anyone to spend Christmas with, etc.

I assume a few gas stations and stuff will be open; does anyone know of other stores and businesses that will be open?

Yes, newspapers and TV news are open 24/7/365. Working Christmas day I had to work Thanksgiving; my officemate gets Christmas.

My closest family is 2.5 hours away, but honestly, even if I didn't have any close by, I still wouldn't want to work on a holiday. A day off is a day off! -- and all too rare for me.

Itis a nice thought Perna, but some employees are forced to work or lose their job. A manager from Walmart told me she has to work atleast 4 hours or lose her job.

Oh yeah, cops and firefighters don't get holidays off either. Nor do emergency room or other hospital personnel.

I have worked Christmas day many a time. I was a horse riding instructor years ago and horses still need looking after. I have also worked in a hospital (no horses there Working Christmas day), people still need care even on Christmas day.

I will be thinking of all those people who are busy caring for and working hard for other people on Christmas day.

Well, I guess it could be either a blessing or a curse to have to work Christmas Day....then again, i believe most stores offer bonuses/overtime to those working special holidays, so im assuming the non-christians benefit a bit if they are able to work Xmas.

some companies offer time and a 1/2 ... for giving up the whole day (missing dinner, friends, family, etc.) employees earn enough to pay a higher tax and give up whatever is earned...

nice thoughts though... wish something could be done...

one Christmas a customer apparantly carried an extra gift with her to give said employees.. it was my lucky day..

i recieved a small, inexpensive picture frame, but i kept the memory... God Bless that girl...

I've also worked in hospitals, and worked every holiday. It's ironic, I used to decorate the whole house, do all the shopping, wrapping, and cooking, and now I don't work and have no time or energy for any of it.
