I wasn’t alive in the 80’s. I wish I was though. I love watching the Mikey Life cereal commercial on YouTube. Life cereal is pretty good too.

I don't remember a lot from my childhood... but...
Very early '80s. One of my friends had a huge collection of the Strawberry Shortcake dolls - the ones that were all named after food items, and SMELLED SO YUMMY! Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Muffin... I can't remember the rest, but they all smelled so good! Anyone else remember these? Here's a blog post someone wrote about them, with pictures! VHS players and recorders. This ole bulky tapes have a special place in my memory. Back in those days, we had no local cinema so we would wait patiently for movies to be released on tape. Back then we only had 2 TV channels to booth, so Saturdays afternoon and a video was a real treat. We would also have pancakes or Choc bars and a can of pop/soda. Aaa the 80ts...

My sister and had all the Barbie stuff; the car, the United airplane, the townhouse, the pool, and later the dream house. It was Barbie-tastic!

What I remember of the eighties was a black plastic ball with two metal peices, you wrapped your fingers around the ball so you touched both metal bands at once and the ball started laughing. It was a ha ha ball I found at the department store. I loved that ball, those were some of my darkest days and the ball helped. Sadly I left it in my purse in the back of a taxi. Never saw them again, or my purse.

Two great films that Dad loved and introduced to me, were: This Is Spinal Tap (1984) and The Stunt Man (1980) and he was on the film set of Stunt Man.

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986 certainly made a worldwide impact. I was 17 at the time and used to follow news events on TV, radio, and in the newspapers.

@guilloche I remember Strawberry shortcake dolls and their lovely scent, yes!
Rainbow Brite, Punky Brewster, lite brite (amazing toy), My little pony, Barbies (my friends and I had beauty pageants for them, and made ken and Barbie kiss all the time lol. Ken was always renamed "Jeff" lol. Guess that was a popular name). Cabbage Patch dolls. |

The music. I was too young to appreciate the awesomeness of 80s music, but that's why there's Spotify.
The hair, big and permy and lots of hair spray. The girls styles. I was too young, but I remember seeing the teen girls at the time dress with leggings and big sweatshirts. Headbands. Shoulder pads. |

Old school Sesame Street. And the movies they came out with, like Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (that was actually 1978, but it was popular when I was a child), and Dont Eat the Pictures (a movie about the sesame street gang taking a trip to the metropolitan museum of art, its completely worth the watch, btw).

For me, that's one of those "I remember where I was when..." things. I was working in a department store while in college & was at work when it happened. That day I spent a lot of time in the nearby electronics department trying to see what was happening on television. |
