Earlier today, I got to thinking about the value of non-material gifts. Out of curiosity, I googled "non-material gifts" and was disappointed to find that most articles still included gifts that ultimately cost money. For example, sending someone a gift card for a massage or creating a scrapbook for them of memories. Though all ideas were quite lovely, that's not what I had in mind. What about small gifts to others (and/or ourselves) that cost absolutely nothing?

This past Friday, I had a video session with my psychiatrist. I now live across the ocean from him. At the time of the appointment, it was almost sunset where I was and I have a beautiful view out my living room window. At one point I mentioned that and asked if he'd like to see the view. He said yes, and I managed to point the video cam so he could fully enjoy it. I could tell afterwards that that meant a lot to him. It cost me nothing. It was a kind/thoughtful act that I think many would appreciate.

What non-material ($0 or other currency) thing have you done, had done to you, or wish had been done?

Sometimes giving such gifts as above result in returned ones, of a sort.

Acts of service. Clean the house for them. Or do their laundry or get their shopping done. Fix something broken. Cook a meal. I mean if no money should be spent, you cook from ingredients one already has in their fridge.

Write a poem or a song for them. But only if you are good at it, I’d rather not listen bad songs or poetry. So this gift wouldn’t be my first choice but act of service is a good one

If I just am pleasant to be around instead of a moody jerk that helps out a lot regarding the peace in the house.

A gift I’ve gotten is my family being so understanding and supportive of my situations.

Sending someone a "Good Morning" text, wishing people well, giving virtual hugs, being nice on the phone to customer service people, smiling, saying, "Thank you", showing up, truly listening, praying for others, meditating (for yourself), sending positive vibes, offering encouragement, giving a compliment and random acts of kindness like opening a door.

Truly being there for someone in a time of need. That’s a priceless gift. Also, making small day to day changes for someone you love. Giving a little more of your time to your loved ones. A large and well thought out DIY project. Companionship, validation, a firm handshake, a smile, a good laugh and, whatever the opposite of enabling is. All good non-material goods.

I'm being theoretical and not very specific, but universal compassion helps.

A lot of times I don't have money but I have time so I help do things rather than give something that costs money
