Hey everyone! I was just wondering how many of us have already gotten or intend to get the flu shot this year. We're being told that it's going to be a difficult year this time because we are not in lockdown like last year. My friend and I were lucky when we went to the pharmacy the other day. No one was waiting in line! I don't usually get the flu shot, but I thought it best this year for the older people around me. Just a curious mind wanting to know.

Nope....no flu shot. Last time I had one I got so sick I swore NEVER AGAIN. Haven't had the flu since then. I have bad reactions to meds or any chemical that goes into my body so I don't take anything. I even have bad reactions to antibiotics. I don't do a lot of socializing anyway living on my farm in the country

I got flu like symptoms with my first flu shot. None after that.
I got the flu shot on my birthday, September 5. I got my Covid booster a couple weeks ago, so I should be all set. |

I received my flu shot on the same day as my Moderna shot #3 - on Oct. 29, 2021, if I recall correctly.
My flu shot was given to me by the VA women's clinic circa 8:30 a.m. My Moderna jab # 3 was given to me just a few hours later at the local university that opened their vaccines to the public, which was approximately 10:45 a.m. The third Moderna shot was milder than when I had the second Moderna shot. My Moderna arm was really sore, but my flu arm wasn't sore at all. My friend decided not to get the flu shot, even though he had the Pfizer shots. He wound up getting sick with the flu and was bedbound for a few weeks. He tested negative for Covid-19, but positive for the flu. Yes, the flu is going around. |

I got my flu shot 2 weeks before a surgery in October. I wasn’t taking any chances.
I got a bit queasy later the next day but it wasn’t like how it was last year with the flu shot.

I got my flu shot about 10 days ago. I was lucky - no line up at the pharmacy and I didn't have any reaction, not even a sore arm.

I haven't gotten one this year, mostly because of lack of convenience. In the US, I simply went to the pharmacy, when they were offered. Now in Czech Republic, I don't know where to get it. Not pharmacies. That was confirmed. I think maybe general practitioner offices? My new GP never has anything to offer. I need to look for someone else. I did get both Pfizer covid shots, but they were offered at a local hospital downtown.

Am planning on getting it as soon as a problem molar is dealt with, and that situation is resolved.
All our local pharmacies offer them, which is very convenient and helpful. |

I got mine flu shot this past October because this is the time of year I get the flu. Had I known about the vaccine? I would have gotten one years ago.

No, I haven't looked into it. Had no side effects from this year's shot though and haven't got the flu. But I am wearing a mask in public, so that probably helps prevent infection too.

You bring up an excellent question. The VA I go to didn't answer my question about the type of flu vaccines given, and if it includes the typical A and B and H1N1 types. She couldn't answer that for me. You would think they would know, but they don't. At least at the pharmacies like Walgreens, CVS, etc., they will give you a sheet explaining the kind of vaccine you're getting. I see now why veterans think that they are lab rats.

I was very concerned with how early the flu shots came out. How could scientists anticipate strains that haven't happened yet? I typically don't get my flu shot until October but this year I may not get it.

Quote:
I did hear that this year's flu season is going to be bad. Mostly because for 2020 the majority were wearing masks so germ prevention from covid also protected against the flu and the 2020 flu season was at the lowest (if not the record) its been seen for years. ( if you still doubt masks work look at last years flu stats) The Under grad school my son got his bs from as a flu outbreak and they just went virtual for 2 weeks. I got mine about a month ago at the same time I got my booster. No reactions of any kind for either. It takes a good six weeks to build immunity for the flu so you can still get it.

My friend in Chicago only got his Covid-19 vaccines (J&J initially, then he started over and did two jabs of Pfizer). He didn't think he needed the flu shot, but he wound up getting sick with the flu. He's in good shape and relatively young, but he was pretty sick for at least 3 weeks with the flu. Not everyone is lucky, and the flu can spread to others who are immunocompromised and therefore not fully protected from vaccines (i.e., breakthrough cases). The vaccines protect both ourselves and others, not just ourselves. It also helps slow the mutations of influenza or even cross-breeds of viral and/or bacterial infections, if that's even possible. Many didn't think that the kind of coronavirus we're seeing today was possible until it happened, and now that's getting worse.
So please, consider getting the flu shot to protect yourself and others. Unless you have allergic reactions to the flu shot, it really is the safest way to prevent additional respiratory infections. I said what I said about the VA because I'm just frustrated at the lack of information that they should be aware of when patients ask them. We're no longer in the military; we should have a right to know what we are putting into our bodies, and what alternatives there are. If you truly cannot get the flu shot, then consider social distancing, essential outings only, and mask-wearing whenever you're indoors outside of your home, such as in hallways of your apartment or condo complex, in common rooms, at work, shopping, or in crowded outdoor areas. |
