I kinda of feel like I won the housing lottery as getting into subsidized housing here is next to impossible - wait lists are measured in years, sometimes decades.

But I got into a boarding house run by a Catholic charity specifically for women with mental health issues - I was able to skip the que, because I knew someone who already lives there and she recommended me.

The building is really clean and well maintained, and the other residents seem nice. There's a total of 5 women in the house so it's not huge.

It's half the cost of the market rent I'm paying now, and will cut the commute time to my job from an hour and a half, to about 15 min., plus I'll be closer to my clubhouse, plus I'll save over a hundred a month in transit fees alone.

This is going to make a huge difference in my quality of life overall.

Oh, brilliant! That’s fantastic. When I was on sec8 it helped me stabilize being in a nice apartment and having low bills so that money wasn’t such a huge worry. Money was still tight but a less bit of worry than it had been. I’m so happy for you! 😆

Great news! I knew the housing situation has been very stressful for you recently.

Wait lists for subsidized housing are incredibly long in the US too.

@possum220 I'm moving in April 1. And unfortunately I can;t have a cat as I'm only renting a room, which is actually quite tiny and they don't allow pets in the building.

That is too bad that you can't have a cats. But sounds like you will have roommates so shouldn't get lonely.

@downandlonely

Yes having roommates I think will be good for me, and for dinner the residents of all 5 houses come together for one big dinner. And when I went in for my trial dinner to meet a few people, I really felt that they had a strong sense of community which is something I've been missing through Covid.

I also think living with people will be good for my mental health.

Only a few weeks to go. It sounds great to be some place affordable and something that you can relax in. Will that harp of yours fit? It will be nice to have company. Maybe that's even better than a cat.

@downandlonely, I don't even have to cook. They have a cook on staff who prepares the dinners. I just have to get myself lunch, and dinners on weekends,

@possum220. I'll have to see about the harp. I'm going to go in and re see the place in early March so I can better assess the room size and the storage space. I know there isn't space in my room for my harp, so I'm hoping it can go in one of the sitting rooms, and that I'll be able to negotiate an hour a day when I can practice, with the other women. If not, I'll probably rent it out to one of my teacher's other students as my teacher can't afford to store my harp indefinitely.

Wow, I'm jealous that you don't have to cook. I would love having someone to cook for me.

I think the best combination is that you will have other people around part of the day yet you’ll have your own room to go to for privacy and to recharge so to speak. In addition since you work you’ll be busy with that, which is a plus.
