Just heard in the last hour that over 400,000 are still w/o power. I can't get over the ferocity of that hurricane.

And, I'm so glad you are alright!

People in the area where Ian made landfall may be without power for a month or more. The infrastructure is completely destroyed.

My power has stayed on. It flickered a couple of times Monday which made my heart go pittypat. Stayed on though.

My water went out last night. My well guy warned me that I need to plan on replacing the pump before the end of the year because of age. I figured the pump had died. I had myself an absolute pity party. This morning when I got up the water was on! Turns out a lizard crawled in the power box and electrocuted itself. Sorry for the lizard, but happy for me!

Aww. That sucks lizardlady. I hope they are back on soon.

We went through something similar with our power and water after an 8.8 earthquake. Once the services were reestablished, we still had some blackouts and water shut-offs. They had to sort of patch things together to get things up as running as quickly as possible, so things weren't exactly stable.

Aww no! I’m sorry. Hopefully it’s just temporary. What a bummer. Did you still have pails of water or were you caught out?

Yes, I have buckets of water on the tub. For now they are going to be a permanent fixture.

Power came back on about an hour ago. Pump came on when power came on. I'm living in the 21st century again instead of the 17 hundreds.

Una, "lizardlady" was a real life nickname I got years ago because I love the hot weather.

No power here means no water because the pump can't run. I've decided to invest in a generator. One big enough to run everything would be nice but probably cost too much. I would be happy to run the pump and fridge plus charge my phone. Am going to talk to my well guy about what size I need to run the pump.

After the no water- water - no water - water and power on and off today I took a loooong HOT shower tonight. Damn it felt good.

I never heard a peep about what to do if you don't have a bank account with thousands in it, a new, reliable car, and provisions for your pets.

My son and DIL were just in Georgia (the country) for 2 weeks. He said that Russians are generally disliked in Georgia because they take advantage of the lower prices in Georgia by bargaining to pay less for higher quality, and that Russians look down on Georgians and mistreat them, which of course, Georgians resent.
Oh wow. What were they doing there? It’s not a common place to visit or vacation at. My daughter and son in law went there for vacation right before the pandemics.

It’s an interesting observation. In general Georgians are pretty tolerant despite being hot natured. It was probably the only republic in the USSR that didn’t have much or any of anti semitism, which was rampant everywhere else

They travel to many, many, MANY places, all over the world. They live in San Francisco...work, work, work, then travel. My son attended university in Italy, then in Paris. Since then he (then they) have continued to travel.

Georgia...yes, the people are known to be friendly and my son and DIL love to travel to places that are especially beautiful - beautiful nature. They really enjoy eastern European countries. My DIL is 1/2 Filipino, so they sometimes go to visit her mother's family in the Philippines.

They have traveled all over Europe, but don't seem to want to spend more time there, in general. They do visit friends, though. They have many friends who are from the UK and from Ireland, but didn't seem too fond of visiting the UK. My son and I went to Ireland together; I fell in love with it - I could live there. He liked it. They also enjoy Mexico and some places in Mexico. And south America. They just really love to travel!

My grandparents, who were Jews, were from Belarus and Ukraine, but escaped from the oppression of the era (app. 1910) and immigrated to the U.S. (NYC). Terrible antisemitism, yes. Thank God they were long gone by the time Hitler invaded.

How did your daughter and SIL like Georgia?

Doc John, thanks for mentioning this. Personally I do not need the help, but I know there are other members who live in the state.

I would like to thank everyone who offered support. You helped me ride out a really rough time.

I heard this story right after Ian went through. It still blows my mind. A couple with a THREE MONTH OLD BABY decided to ride out the storm in their house IN FORT MYERS!!!! I mean WTF!?!? When their house flooded they put their baby in a plastic bin and tried to swim to safety! In one interview I heard with the mother she said she was worried about the baby because he can't swim!!!!! Should thought of that when you were told to evacuate you dumb B!!!!!

I know I stayed because I could not get cats in carriers. I can tell you I would have been heartbroken, but would have left them behind if we were in the direction path of the storm.

Oh, my goodness, dear lizardlady!!, What happened, so much pain to look back upon, right? It hurts us on various levels, right? Our pasts have maybe made us who we are? God bless you, dear lizardlady! And I wish for all of us that these tragedies willl stop. What a beautiful Earth we have, in spite of everything?

I am sitting here bawling like a baby after watching a video of people rescuing pets(and their people) after Ian. The segment that triggered the waterworks was an elderly man standing outside his house in chest deep water talking to a rescuer in a boat. He is shaking and crying saying that it's him, his wife and their three cats. He seemed so overwhelmed and helpless. Happy news is that the couple and all three cats were airlifted out.
