I was 17 when I graduated high school in 70. I was into classical & symphony music so was doing my own thing during that time & studying computer science & accounting.

I wasn’t fashion conscious until my teens in the 80s when I liked to go to Top Shop and Etam. I loved roller skating too and the roller discos were my favourite. Pac-Man and space invaders were the arcade games we loved to play, this was before the consoles came out - when they did they were basic, Atari with pong, basically a dot on a screen and two goals each side! They developed pretty rapidly though and we had better games like Frogger were you had to dodge across the road.

My mom made lots of my clothes. It was gorgeous too. She was very crafty. Knitting sewing. I even had a coat hand made. Sweaters. Skirts. Dresses. I had a hand knitted sweater with the night sky and a little village in the back. It was dark navy with yellow moon and stars. So pretty

Skating! Not roller. I don’t know how to roller skate. Ice skating. We had huge ice skating rinks. And it was cold enough every winter for it to stay on all winter. With global warning it’s not cold all winter through. Music was playing and it was so much fun. I was never great but good enough I guess to enjoy it although I fell a lot. We went every weekend with school mates.

Also remember swimming at any weather. We grew up by the sea. Water there is almost never sufficiently warm. I got used to swimming in cold water but now I am spoiled and wouldn’t go in the water unless it’s warm hahah but we used to swim until lips were blue haha

Oh yeah music. ABBA. I still like ABBA. Hahah it never left my system

The same, I think it’ll stay with us forever!

That sounds amazing, and so lovely you still remember the sweater your mom made. We had those beautiful snowflake jumpers knitted by my grandma, still remember the beautiful colours she used.

My mum was a whiz with clothes too. There were these home economics contests you could enter, for sewing. I was about 7-8 when mum entered one. I modeled the dress she made and got to pick out a prize. The dress was lovely and had a little purse that went with it. That was the 60’s though.

I was in high school in 75, 76, 77. Middle school 74, 73, 72. I remember vividly going back to school shopping in a larger city in 72 for my transfer to middle school. I got some edge of fashion hot pants. They looked great on me but I wore them once and got so many cat calls and whistles I never wore them to school again.

Wow we have a lot of 90s babies. I was born in 92. I turn 30 next month!!!

I loved the 90s. I was the biggest fan of the Spice Girls, loved Pokemon and had binders full of Pokemon cards, and loved most Nickolodean shows, particularly Rugrats, Wild Thornberries, and Spongebob. I also really loved Barney the Dinosaur when I was a toddler. I also had a tomagatchi and am searching for another one that I can play with since they still make them. The first movie I saw in theaters was Toy Story at age 3.

What crushed my childhood was the death of Steve Irwin AKA The Crocodile Hunter. I still follow Bindi, his daughter who now has a daughter of her own, and her family who are still very active in wildlife conservation.

What delightful memories! I began roller skating when I was a really young girl, but the rinks in the '70's were a blast! I still roller skate, but either in my apartment or on tennis courts because there's no roller rink here, sadly.

Strange, in a way, for California, but we had an ice skating rink in my city. I was a good roller skater and really took to ice skating. I ended up getting involved with figure skating and won some awards. I liked how the ice skating rink place was so cold and refreshing.

We all swam, spring and summer, in pools or in the river. People can only go into the ocean here above the ankles, unless they're surfing. I love getting my feet wet in the ocean when it washes up onto the sand, but the salt always burns my shaved legs.

The moon and stars sweater sounds beautiful.

Oh, Steve Irwin's death was tragic. It hit my kids hard, too. You are so young! I was devastated when Kurt Cobain died, but my kids don't at all remember him alive. My daughter made a dress she sold to Frances Bean Cobain. Your mention of Bindi reminded me of Frances Bean.

That’s so cool you still skate! I hung up my boots a long time ago but good for you, it’ll keep you fit. Yeah I wonder if there are any roller rinks at all now, it seems such a 70s and 80s thing. Our rink was an old ballroom so I guess each generation has its hey day.

Alas I didn’t keep any of those lovely dresses but have some nice photos to remind me. Mum made all my dolls clothes too - so clever.

Oh, it's good you have the photos. My mother used to speak proudly of her own mother's ability to sew lovely clothes.

Yes, there are roller rinks all over the place in California, and probably in other states, as well. Also outdoor skate parks. There was a nice skate park here where I live, but stupid covid has caused the closure of so many nice things.

Ah that’s good you still have some of those rinks in California! We have an outdoor skate park here but it’s for skateboarding, lots of short steep ramps, Sorry yours ended up shut due to covid .

There are roller rinks everywhere. There’s one huge by us. They have classes there too and game arcade for those who don’t want to roller skate. It’s owned and running by a local family since 1942.

There’s tiny towns spotted all around us and one of them about 15 minutes away had a skate rink but it burnt down during covid shutdown and they chose not to rebuild. It was an institution owned and operated by a local family. There’s various outside skateboard parks and the ice skating rink that used mostly for hockey. A neighborhood girl used to skate with in-line roller skates on the streets and bicycle trails around here but they moved this summer. So there’s not really anything left except a dance hall in another small town. They had live bands in decades past but since the 70’s it’s canned music. It just celebrated its 75th year recently.

The malls that were such a huge part of life are now being torn down. On-line shopping has made most stores close. There’s a small one about 30 minutes to the west or a larger one and hour to the east and mall of America 2+ hours to the north.

Oh, how I miss malls. @Nammu, some of the most joyful days of my life were spent with my daughter in malls during the '90's and early 2000's. We had such fun! There was one store where we could sit in a nice area and try on make-up and paint our nails. Ooh, and Hot Topic!

Do you know that there is a Toy Museum in the U.S.? I saw on the news that Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots were just inducted!

Ooo I knew about the museum but I hadn’t heard they’d inducted the the battling robots. How cool.

I know, I miss malls. You could make a day of it. Plus they were great places to walk in the fall, winter and spring.
