....a city in your state reports an ICE QUAKE! you know it's cold when....
===
The shaking some UW-Madison staffers and others felt Thursday afternoon near Lake Mendota was most likely an ice quake.

UW-Madison geologists say they recorded a tremor just before one this afternoon that lasted a few seconds.

A seismologist says ice quakes are caused by large shifts in ice and often triggered by drastic temperature changes, similar to those seen in the past few days.

=====

My other "you know it's cold when" item is when your windshield wiper fluid only squirts out as blue slush!

Anybody else in the deep freeze? you know it's cold when....

when you open the front door for the 3 doggies to go outside for their potty walk....they stick their nose out the door, turn around without even going outside, & then pee on my floor!!!!!!

They are CA doggies & they just don't get this freezing weather here in KY.

when the front porch welcome mat is frozen to the deck & crunches under your feet.

By the way, my window washer blue stuff won't even come out....it's completely frozen...no slushy stuff here.....lol

Debbie

PS, I do love the cold...just wish there was more snow with it.

Candy,

Was your vehicle in the garage during the last ice storm? My trailblazer was out, and ice is so packed that my windshield wipers cannot turn off! (can't reach the home point). I thought that I'd take care of it on my own and go through a car wash. Unfortunatley/fortunately depending upon your view, the ppl from the power company were there repairing lines so I was unable to. This made my husband VERY happy, seems I'm ruining my seals (around doors) by going through the car wash when it's -30F with the windchill. Who knew?

Oh yeah, garage is a necessity this far north!! My car sat out for 3 hours yesterday while I was covering a multitude of court proceedings and was covered in ice by the time I got out!

Debbie, poor doggies! If you want snow, come on up, though -- we have over a foot on the ground that isn't going anywhere anytime soon! you know it's cold when....

Poor doggie, Angie!! I feel so bad for the critters who have to stay outside! I wish all of them had loving owners.

When we lived out West, they did not believe that you could plug your car in (block heater) and that companies actually had poles in parking lots for employees to plug their cars in when they went into work. They thought I made the whole thing up until another transplant out there from MN, confirmed my story.

I really have to clean out the garage so that at least one vehicle can go in there! It's on the list! Maybe in the spring!

washing car in the winter = bad. very bad. unless you have a garage, otherwise good luck getting back into your car after you park it somewhere for awhile lol. had my car serviced last year and they washed it in the winter.. ended up breaking my passenger door lock cuz of it and now can only lock and unlock using the key.

you know its cold when the shocks on your car dont work and you feel/hear every single tiny little bump in the road, making it sound and feel like your car is falling to peices on you.

I'm up in the White Mountains of AZ so it still snows, but it's not nearly as cold as MN! (I moved to AZ from MN 6 months ago) Every morning when everyone comes into work complaining about the cold I remdind them that the low isn't even the high in MN. For example a couple of weeks ago it was 7 degrees here...when the high in MN was -5! It snows alot here, but the temps are MUCH better! *happy dance*

LOL, Hyper. My cats haven't resorted to the heating vents yet(which are in the floor, so could be resorted to). We just got an electric blanket a couple weeks ago but I've only used it once or twice. The "warm air rises" scientific thing keeps the second story of our two-story townhouse a good temp.

I try to run out without clearing the windows; wasting a gallon of the blue slush trying to keep the front window clear enough to see and hoping the defroster warm up and will keep it clear enough by itself once I get to the main road. I went and picked up a friend a couple weeks ago and tried to put the electric windows down when I got to her house 10 minutes later and they were still frozen, the motors in the window weren't strong enough. I had to open my door to talk to my friend before she got in and remind her what to bring. Brrrrrr.

I use to hate the door frozen or key won't fit thing, haven't had that for awhile. Having to go back to the house for hot water, etc., if putting one's warm, bare hand or blowing on it didn't work.

My car door was frozen shut the other day. Not the lock - the lock was fine it was the door. I had to lean on it to melt the ice with my body heat.

lol. somebody on another web chat said that there was a 'flash freeze warning' somewhere in canada. that was last week during the cold blast. i had never heard of that phrase. it totally reminded me of that movie 'the day after tomorrow.' hehe. funny.
