I'm not talking your three little pigs, hansel and grettle, snow white, etc, share with me some good kids stories that you know that I probably don't

(I'm going to use your suggestions to buy the books and read to myself when I'm anxious or struggling))

Black beauty was my favorite book in grade school. I also adored Misty and I think the red pony. Oh, Hans Brinker, the silver skates. Heidi.

I liked the 'young readers' version' of Charles Kingsley's "The Water Babies".

It took me away and gave me hope.

The Dr Doolittle books were a great escape. There were many adventures, my favorite was traveling under the sea in the snail and to the moon.

I guess it depends on the reading age you’d prefer…

For younger age I’d suggest anything by Shirley Hughes, especially the Alfie books. The illustrations are so charming and detailed.

A little older and Roald Dahl is fun, especially Danny Champion of the World.

The Lemony Snicket Unfortunate Series of events is a great series, full of quirkiness and mystery.

And of course any Harry Potter is a riveting read.

The Laura Ingalls Wilder books. The Anne of Green Gables series by LM Montgomery. Heidi by Johanna Spyri as suggested above (I'm reading it now because I can't read adult books at the moment because of depression).

Theres a book version of Jumanji. It was written a few years before the 1995 movie. I was listening to it the other night. I've read the book and the pictures are really cool.

Chris Van Allsburg had some amazing books, I’d also recommend The Wreck of the Zephyr and The Garden of Abdul Gasazi

Thinking about books I read to DD, but that I also enjoyed:

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series are fun, fast reads.

Younger kids books that come to mind are the Junie B. Jones books (I love Junie!), Pinkalicious, and if you like cats, SkippyJon Jones.

(Those Joneses are unrelated )

What an excellent list! So many on there we’d loved and forgotten.

Many years ago I was invited to a baby shower whereby we were asked to gift a childrens book that has special meaning to us, I remember I chose Dear Zoo because our son loved to predict the animal on each page.

I don't know if they do books, probably do, but I found watching the Teletubbies to be quite relaxing. Tinky-Winky and the crew

Judy Blume. She wrote are you there god, it’s me Margaret. Lots of her books would be good. The little prince. P

Anything by Astrid Lindgren (Swedish) and Tove Jansson (Finnish). Neither is popular in the US. It’s a shame

Merry Poppins. Again movies are popular but most kids here haven’t read the books. Not popular, strangely. It was likely my favorite book of all times.

Mary Poppins was the first hard cover book I partially read by myself. My dad starting reading it out loud and then I took over reading quietly for myself. I recently started listening to it on a audiobook.

I second the recommendations for Astrid Lindgren and Tove Jansson. Yes, hu-u-ugely popular in Russian translation, both of them and especially Lindgren, but unfortunately not in the US.

I will add: "The Blue Bird" by the Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck.
It is a play. I saw it in a theater, probably my first theater experience as a child. Was mesmerized by it. Also recently started listening to it on an audiobook. If you cannot find a play performance next to you, you can still read it for yourself or out loud. Here is the full text for free:
The Blue Bird, by Maurice Maeterlinck
