Stocking up creates artificial shortage that leads to mass hysteria like with toilet paper during covid.

I’d not be doing much different than normal BUT it makes sense to have staples at home that don’t go bad fast. Like grains. Can beans. Flour. Etc

I usually do stock up on household cleaning products and toiletries etc just because I like to have extra
Thanks for this!

MD, thanks for not making this a political discussion.

I will admit the news makes me anxious about possible shortages, but I am in a head space right now that lots of things make me anxious.

My solution? Hurricane season starts June 1st. I start hurricane prep this time of year. I don't panic buy stuff, but will add a bit of supplies I might need each time I shop. My goal is to have any supplies I might need before June 1st. That way I avoid the crazy panicked crowds when a storm approaches.

My suggestion to you would be to do what brings you peace of mind. Am not advocating you run out and buy out the store, but if getting some staples brings you peace go for it.

I saw Prepper Princess on youtube had more cans of coffee stacked on top of her kitchen cabinets than my local Safeway. She said if a shortage comes and she cant get her coffee, it wont be pretty, and i believe her! She makes me look like Mother Theresa mood-wise! She doesnt even flush her toilet to save money. Then she wonders why she cant get a roommate. She loves her dogs though. An interesting person. I could never be that disciplined.

I just bought some extra 4 packs of canned tuna and canned chicken. I also got some extra hygiene products. I didn't go overboard since I already have a good supply of food.

Early maybe but no harm to start. I'm planning to get a couple of pairs of spare specs and some dental work that's needed.

Growing up we had frequent power outages and had well water and often went by the phrase "if it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down (with melted snow shoved in the back of the toilet)"

Stuff that doesn't go bad for years and doesn't need fridgeration is never a bad idea to have a bit of extra. You never know when a storm's gonna hit (weather or otherwise)

I know that poem from california water shortages too, but i mean like she NEVER flushes! I think i blocked out what she does! Im okay with her oatmeal every morning and sharing dinner with her pups (okay, slight crush!) but the toilet sitch kinda ruined it.

Does she poop in it? If she does, does she like take it outside and bury after or use it as fertilizer or something?

I'm just thinking toilets flush for a reason

Can soups is a good idea. If it’s a hearty kind, one can could be the whole meal. And they have lots options now like low sodium or low fat or other dietary needs. There are some gourmet kinds that are pretty tasty. Mind you it’s not homemade but cans don’t go bad for a long time

Things like imported alcohol, coffee, sadly, fruits and vegetables which don’t keep unless you buy a bunch and can them. Cars. Beer, anything made with metal or rare earths like tablets, computers and phones.

Build a brick oven in the backyard, buy a barrel of flour, a few cases of canned tomato slurry, some yeast, some basil seeds and feed for your cow....[or goats if space is an issue.]

Trade yer rustic pizza slices to the masses for old and broken gold...

and build an empire in the ashes...!

pardons...difficult to shut da hell up on occasion.

A few years ago my dad had a “prepper episode” and bought a bunch of freeze dried meals, a Gas powered and a solar powered generator, a solar powered water thermos (yeah, I don’t know either) (also like $1000 in slot car racing stuff but that doesn’t quite fit the theme other than that of spending money he didn’t have).

You could go that route MD. Slot cars might be the next currency.

My mom just got a new car last Monday. I think my 3.5 year old Samusung phone is indestructible at this point.

I did buy a pair of Nike Dunks today. They said on the news they are going to go up $75 a pair and they are already $115 and the ones I bought were on sale for $85. Idk. My mom said it was a bit goofy but Idk.

I was honestly considering living off of cat food the other day. Or dog. The dog food looked better because they had deer flavored chew treats, but, yeah, I’d be down for grocery shopping at Pet Supplies Plus instead of Market Basket on the monthly or less.

There’s a thing when you’re backpacking to bring cat food because you will eat it in an emergency situation and ONLY in an emergency situation.

I was concerned about everything happening in the world and prepping. Husband doesn't want to hear it ,so if I decide to stock up on a few things ,I will.
I guess anything can be taken too far. I made the mistake of watching some videos on YouTube about preparing for whatever. Bad idea! I obsessed over every possibility for weeks. Not good for someone with depression! I wouldn't ever want to run out of Marshmallow Fluff, though.

You could stock up today if you're concerned about a steep price increase for "foreign" products. For me that would be coffee and olive oil.

It depends on how much space you have in your home. I tend to buy textile products in bulk when they're on sale. When stuff disappeared during COVID, I had a 6=18 mega roll package of toilet paper that lasted a couple / few months. I ran out just as the Mexican toilet paper arrived in the stores.

Really, I buy a lot of any non-perishable staple when it's on sale.

But imagine if Avian Flu (or anything) becomes a pandemic during our fun little trade war.

Actually I quite like my cat's dry food, a Blue Wilderness chicken formula. Whenever I open a new bag, I eat handfuls of it. Her other food is Tiki Cat (also chicken). It's much harder (like dog food) so I eat only a few pieces of that.

Marilyn vos Savant once wrote that if she were a prisoner, and if her captors made her pick only one thing to eat, she'd choose to eat dog food. It meets all the nutritional needs of a human. Then she followed up in a later column to say she'd pick pizza.

Oh, this reminds me that during COVID, I didn't worry that I'd run out of food. But I did worry that the cats and dog would run out. That's when I started ordering online with repeat delivery.
