Hi guys I realize there are quite of few of you Wii fans out there, this one is for you.

Prince of Persia, Rival Swords

Type: 3rd Person Action/Adventure
Developer Ubisoft Montreal
Rating: Mature

Highs: Excellent port of “Two Thrones”, Well adapted to Wii. Great Graphics, Deep story, fluid game play, high production values.

Lows: No additional content over the older “Two Thrones”

The Background: Rival Swords is a straight port of Prince of Persia, The Two Thrones,( PS2, XBOX, Gamecube) the last of a Trilogy that began with “The Sands of Time” Ubisoft brought this game over exactly as it was and remapped the control scheme for the Nunchuck/Wii-mote.

The Story: This game is the end of a trilogy that began with Sands of Time, and continued with Warrior Within (both available on Gamecube if you are interested) The Prince( He is never given a name) has settled his issues with the Dahaka, the Beast of Fate and has freed the empress of time, Kailena, and is taking her back to his home in Babylon. He believes that everything he has done to foul up the timeline in the last two games has been addressed and that all will be right with his father when he returns. Unfortunately for him, he has made a fatal miscalculation that resurrects his old nemesis, the Vizier, his main enemy in the first game. The Vizier has conquered Babylon and the city is in flames when the Prince arrives and Kailena is taken prisoner. The Vizier uses Kailena to unleash the powers of the Sands of Time to make himself a God, only the Prince stands in his way.

The game play: POP rival swords is an action game, with an assortment of puzzles, and lots of hand to hand combat. The Prince must gain the dagger of time and stop the Vizier. The Prince moves with grace and agility through his environment perform sweet acrobatic moves, leaps, wall running and climbing. The game play mechanics are superb; the Prince drives like a dream. Combat consists of swordplay and quick time actions called “stealth kills” . With the Wiimote you swing it left or right, once you acquire the ability to wield dual weapons the nun chuck comes into play, it’s quite eloquent in practice. The other element is the ability to control time. This comes into play most when you make an error on a jump and are about to fall to your death, Hit a button a rewind the action, then correct your mistake, a bit like Tivo. At about a quarter way through a second personality emerges, one that’s darker, more insidious and sadistic. At certain points this will physically manifest itself as “The Dark” Prince our hero transforms into a wraith like creature, equipped with a “dagger tail” this spear point on chain is a powerful weapon and can be used as a grappling hook. The player does not control the actual transformation and when the dark prince steps into any body of water he changes back. The Regular Prince and the Dark Prince constantly bicker throughout the game. Overall it is one of the sweetest playing games out there. The puzzles are tricky, but logical and well thought out, which makes for an interesting challenge that will not frustrate.

The Graphics: The game is a straight port, so there are no upgrades for the Wii. This is not necessarily a bad thing. This was one of finest looking games of the last generation. The game sports large detailed environments, good character models and great lighting and particle effects. Texture mapping is good here as well. The sound effects and music score are first rate and the motion animation is terrific overall. In terms of its presentation it has Mario Galaxy beat by a mile.

Kids Corner: M rated here for a lot of violence, though not nearly as graphic as God of War or Resident Evil, no nudity or sex in this one or any fowl language.

In Conclusion: If you have never tried one of these titles, you guys are in for a real treat. This is simply a great game and in my opinion a good fit for the Wii. The best part is that if you are interested in the whole story, the Gamecube versions of Sands of Time and Warrior Within can be purchased at the Gamestop/EB bargain bin for 10 bucks or so each. This game was a fitting end to a strong well written trilogy.
