I posted a question in health but thought I'd post it here too.

I went to the doc today and he told me he thinks Tyger or one of the other cats I'm taking care of gave me scabies. EWWWWWWWWWW anyway...he told me to wash everything I come in contact with in hot water. I was like ok no problem until I realized I lay on my couch quite a lot reading, sleeping, watching T.V., etc. I spend the better part of my day on the couch sooo how do you clean a couch with hot water? I tried spraying it with Febreze thinking that it helps with allergens but I know that isn't going to kill the mites. I looked and I can't take the cushion covers off the couch and I don't have ready access to a steam cleaner. My parents are in Colorado and my dad is my payee and it wasn't an expense I figured I'd need while they were gone so I don't have access to the money for one until they get home on Sunday and I plan on going to their house on Monday unless it is early enough in the day on Sunday when they get back.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Jbug

All you have to do is vacuum the couch....its not necessary to wash it in hot water or steam clean. It is important to wash your clothes, towels and bedding in hot water....You should also vacuum the carpeting and then change the bag and get rid of the one you just used....outside the house....Good luck to you....scabies is the worst....I had it back in 1992

Thanks Phoenix...one more question if you don't mind...my vacuum doesn't use bags..I have a bagless one and so do I just wash it out afterward?

my daughter got lice a long time ago and gave them to me via the couch we both lay down on.

i was able to buy a spray to spray down the couch and it got rid of the nasty little creeps. bedding, clothes etc. i washed in hot water. perhaps you will find that the drugstore/ chemist - whatever you have will sell this kind of spray. all the best, these things just happen - everywhere!

Wash linens and bedclothes in hot water. Because mites don't live long away from the body, it is not necessary to dry-clean the whole wardrobe, spray furniture and rugs, and so forth.

Mites can only live off the body for up to 24-36 hours. If they are on the couch, and it would make you feel better, then spray the couch with some lysol.

My family had scabies last year and what a pain it was to get everything washed, and they also had a cream to use from the neck down.

Hope you get rid of them quickly (((((( jbug )))))))

its a unfortunate thing to catch but like most ppl have said once you have treated yourself with the liquid you put on your whole body next day wash all bedding and clothes you had been wearing it needs to be repeated

give coushins a good beating outside to try to clean them

Hey JBug,

If you have a bagless vacuum cleaner ...then dump the container into a bag and then tie a knot in bag and throw immediately outside...And other people have said this the scabies mites cannot live off of the body for more than 24 hours so if you want true peace of mind...do not lie on couch for that period of time....but when I had them I just vacuumed the furniture a couple of times..washed clothes and bedding in hot water..and that was the end of it...Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have...
