Very good point. I definately am going to have my wishes put into a legal document, we can't always trust what our spouses may do years from now, especially if a new person comes into the picture.
It is just one of those things, we should all do if we haven't already.
I still haven't even done a Will yet, another thing I must do.
I hope all of this that went down with Terry, encourages people to think and re-think their plans, and not leave anyone having to make a life or death decision, cause that is a difficult place to be in.
Thanks for your replies.

It looks like we all agree that it was a very unfortunate life experience for all that was involved. However, I felt like some of the family members worked really hard to keep their "15 minutes of fame" going as long as they could. I find that very, very sad.

I agree ...that it shouldn't have become the media spectacle it did, but part of the reason that it did was because of the ruling that the husband was "finally" granted after all these years.

Don't get me wrong ...I wouldn't myself want live like that either and yes it should have been in a living will.

But This situation has been going on for several several years in the media...THIS has only now come into light here in this area in people's mind because of what it's become.

Several years ago it was on the OPRAH show because she herself tired to help them and Jed Bush because for the simple fact of when this happened the husband would not allow this family any access to their daughter when she was hospitalized.

That is the reasoning the family took this to the media.

They didn't know what else to do back a long time ago to get to their daughter because of laws that the husband used preventing them access to her.

Do I agree with all of what happened in all the situations in this case ...absolutely not.

But the point is...not all the facts are present in the unfortunate spectacle that was presented only in the last months.

It was a bad situation for Terry...her family and I'll even say her husband ...because I'll even say I don't know what all went on just knowing what I saw way back when ...on the OPRAH show and even previous shows going back several years ago.

It is very, sad. I always find it sad when people sop up being in the spotlight under such circumstances Terry Schivo
Hope y'all have a good week, losing that extra hour of sleep has left me exhausted. Did everyone remember to set your clocks ahead?

It's a tough issue, for sure. And unless you have been directly involved, you don't know "all" the facts.

One point, though, even if you have an advanced care directive, make sure that it specifies that any monies from lawsuit, insurance etc go to what YOU want it to: your rehab or your spouse, children whatever.

Another thing to keep in mind on this specific case: It was in FLORIDA. The insurance companies have the legal system and the medical system IN THEIR POCKETS. Even the few lawyers who try and represent victims are unable to lobby effectively against the rest.

For me, having the families fighting over details after her death, about her burial, that is brutal. The idea of a quick autopsy and cremation sounds decidedly like other strange cases... and why NOT allow a Catholic mass? I don't get it. No, wait, I DO get the greedy, selfishness, and decrepid society we live in today.

Terri, at least, no longer suffers. I'd bet she and the Pope are chattin as we speak...

Wise and Spaz,
I agree with this too, I think most of us really do not know all the "real stuff" that went on with this case, some may never know. . . I put it to rest, and wish the families best wishes towards healing.
Yeah, this is a grey area, nothing is ever "black & white", well somethings are in life.
Good points made from everyone on this thread, nice to see we can share them Terry Schivo

Take care now,

DE

I just had to post on this subject....what our government did to her was beyond belief. I can certainly see taking someone off lifesupport but if they continue breathing it is our duty to feed them. There was a show on tv the other day that showed this man in a vegetative state for 19 yrs....one day he came out of it completely...same thing with another woman. This was truely murder and by our own precious government. Like the president said...always err on the side of life. I hope her husband can live with what he did to her.
