Has any one heard of seizures that cause visual hallucination in a person?

I am asking as I just spent twelve long hours in the emergency room with my three year old niece that was having hallucinations of rats being in her hair and snakes crawling all over body her body (at one point she even thought her arm had fallen off) and nothing her mother or I did could comfort her when the episodes were taking place.... which happened from 10 am that morning until 12 mid night that night - she went to sleep for some well needed rest after she was given medicine that induced sleep.

The doctor at the hospital did lab work with a urine test and a cat scan to rule out brain trauma and any accidental drug intake and they both came back negative... we are now waiting on an apt with a Pediatric Neurologist to have an EGG performed to see if my niece may be suffering from a rare seizure disorder that causes visual hallucinations during the moment the seizure is occurring.

The waiting is killing us.... and while my niece seems 90% her self today we are still concerned with the fact that this could happen again until the cause is determined and treated correctly.

Wow.. I am so sorry What a thing for someone so young to go through.

I don't actually have much of an answer for you - though i have heard of this, never in someone so young. The good news is if it is seizure activity in the brain it should be able to be helped with medication.

Keep your spirits up. Even if it seems like its not working, continue to comfort her. You never know what little bit it might be helping. You are such a good person!

Yes - there are all kind of seizures.

Very best wishes to your niece! I hope that diagnosis allows a successful treatment for her very soon!

I can say from experience that in the midst of a seizure it does feel like your limbs have been detached or something like that and as you can see not being a 3 year old girl even I have trouble trying to explain what its like from a lay point of view . I think it has more to do with the nerves and electrical impulses being sent to that particular part of the body as to what you would feel and even for awhile after there are still lingering feelings that are hard to put into words for people to understand .
Sometimes it just takes all your strength just to speak as your tongue and mouth are more than likely swollen from biting down on them. .
And so on . I may not have gotten all that right . but that is basically how I remember seizures.
I think your niece is brave and mature just to be able to describe all that happened to her in such a way .
And I am sorry she had to go through it

This might not be as technical as the other replies but sometimes books tell it from experience
to your niece

She is finally getting back to her old self after a full week has past - she is still afraid to take a bath, but will take a shower if you stay in the bathroom with her. She will often ask what a noise is if she is unsure and she will not walk through a house if it is dark... and the biggest break though is that she is finally wearing her beautiful long curly black hair down around her neck (she was afraid that the hair was a snake when it touched her neck).

She has been to her pediatrician and she has an apt on June 1st to have an EGG done to see if the event was brought on by a seizure... keeping fingers crossed.

Thanks for asking how she is doing....

It is good to hear she is getting more self confident again.
It takes awhile for things to sink in and you are about to get on with things.

Please give her a big hug from all of us . and tell her she is a very brave little girl

Update for everyone that has been following this thread....

The EGG came back negative for seizures and the neuro doctor will do a follow up in three months just to be safe.... my niece is doing well with a minor fear of snakes being under her covers when she goes to sleep - but over all she is getting back to her old self.

That is great news that she has gotten the all clear
Every little girl thinks there are monsters under the bed . I bought mine a big stuffed snoopy dog to scare them away. She still has it and she is now nearly 25
I hope things go great in 3 months. The only thing I could say is don`t dwell on it all the time just keep it in the back of your mind. The is no need to make her anxious over nothing cbecause little kids pick up the tension .
