Has anyone tried vitamins as an alternative to anxiety medication? I am nursing my 11 month old son and am unable to take any medications pertaining to my Borderline Personality disorder. My Psychologist suggested I take Omega 3 fish oil, Vitamin B, and Gama calm. I am going to try this as there is no other option for medication, just wondering if anyone else has had any experiances with supilments as a means of mental health support? Thanks!

This thread will probably get moved to the health section.
I take Vit. B as a stress supplement. I don't know if it works or not but I do persist. Some time ago I researched all the supplements you mentioned and I believe it is a good mix and should all help you as alternative treatments.

St. John's Wort is good for decreasing depression and depressive thoughts. It also works well for high blood pressure. The B Vitamin Complex group works very well with keeping my stress levels at a manageable level, and I get a boost of energy! You may want to try these things in ADDITION to a women's support group of some sort. If you dont have one in your town for your specific needs, start one up. Your local library should be more than willing to lend you a room for your meetings, and you can advertise in the newspaper for pennies! Good luck!

What about a calcium supplement. If you do start vits and calcium be sure you spread them at least 2 hours apart, as vits and calcium together just cancel each other out as far as what you absorb.
I'd be very careful about taking st. john's wort or other herbals while nursing though, do check with your doctor and/or pharmacy...or a web site that lists drug combination reactions. Many of the herbs and supplements may be passed on to your baby.

I agree with Beholden - it's fine to take fish oil and B vitamins, but be very careful with anything else since you're nursing. Ask your doctor first to be safe.
