I have pernicious anemia and have to get vitamin b12 injections once a month. Does anyone know if this type of anemia is permanent? Will I have to keep getting the shots for the rest of my life or does anyone know if this type of anemia can be temporary and outgrow itself? It's not that i'm afraid of needles or anything, I'm just curious to know if there will be a point where I won't have to keep going if it heals itself (I don't want to be getting the shots for nothing if I don't have to).
Anyone else have this type of anemia or know what would happen if you stop getting the shots? (I"m guessing you'd get quite ill, but would it be fatal or just much unpleasant side effects?) .. I never really asked my doctor much about it and was just wondering..

Depends on why you have the anemia. But yes, pernicious anemia is very serious and you need the shots as long as the doctor decides, it's often caused by a problem that can't heal itself, like that your body can't use dietary B12 properly (why you can't take a pill for it, have to have injections).

The shots aren't necessarily life long for pernicious anemia for some it is. I have to have them off and on depending on how things are. Keeping in touch with doc for blood work and eye on your symptoms will let you know when you need them.
I hate having to get the actual injections but feel much better in the end. It is worth it. Best wishes! ![]() |
