I have seen the same neurologist for the last 10 years for migraine treatment. He has prescribed the same meds (fiorinal w/codeine and maxsalt) for the last 10 years, same dosage. I have taken them as prescribed. For some reason he will not refill my meds. I was told I had to make an appointment, which I did, but he can't see me for 3 weeks. In the past, he would refill my meds until he could see me...His nurse will not return my calls.

Looking this med up....you are not supposed to just stop taking it. You are supposed to wean off of it. It is not safe to just stop. Has anyone been in this situation before? I can't understand why they won't call me back.

i'd keep calling your doctor's office and leave a message explaining what you did here about not skipping doses on that med. i know sometimes policies change regarding renewing Rxs over the phone due to insurance changes as i had that happen once too. or, your doc and his office may just be swamped and hasn't had a chance to get back to you. either way i'd keep calling them.
Thanks for this!

I don't know how many you have left, how often your headaches are, etc. I would call and leave a message that you are worried about butalbital seizures if you run out before seeing the doctor; that should get someone's attention. Or, what I personally would do, is tell my pharmacist my problem; often doctors will talk with pharmacists or other doctors where they won't with the patient. He might be able to get you a few and will certainly be able to tell you how to taper your meds to make sure you are as comfortable as possible before your appointment.

Since you're dealing with a barbiturate and codeine, I'm sure the doctor has to check with you periodically, see how you're doing, take blood tests, etc. I'd give him heck if he hasn't been doing this for the 10 years you've been taking this med. From the problems caused from use of this drug (rebound headaches especially) I would not want to use this drug.

I have called and left several messages that I am concerned about seizures...stilll no return call...I took my last one on wed. No seizures yet. Major abdominal symptoms and chills...I am going to get through this and not keep my appt with him. I will not be on this medication any longer. My thinking is that if I were going to have a seizure...it probably would have already happened???
