I'm 47, had my routine yearly done recently and also went in for my first mammogram. No sonogram done or spoken of, but when I google on -menopause, sonogram- lots of references pop up describing it as a normal routine for our age.
Looks like sonograms are done to check uterine lining. My guess is that you are getting a thorough check up, which is good. Just found this: - Vaginal sonogram (also called a pelvic ultrasound): measures the thickness of your uterine lining, shows if you have uterine or ovarian cysts, endometrial hyperplasia, fibroid tumors, uterine or ovarian cancer, sometimes even endometriosis. I'm in perimenopause, fun fun! Sarah

I don't know about sonograms & age, I had one done when I was in my teens & again when I was 25 or 26. I went due to menstrual problems (which have been cleared up fairly well by the pill) & they wanted to check me for endometriosis, fibroids & cysts. Anyway, both times they told me to have a full bladder so they can get a clear picture... I thought for the first one it would be the one on the surface of the abdomen like a pregnant woman, but no - this was a wand w/a condom on it which was inserted into my vaginal canal & moved around by the technician. It was completely pain-free, took maybe 20 minutes & was less uncomfortable than getting a PAP smear or vaginal exam done.
However, the second time around was embarrassing because the technician was a beautiful Russian, & considering what they were doing to me, I found myself getting very aroused by the whole scenario... ![]()

A little while. If it becomes to uncomfortable for you to hold the urine, they will allow you to release a little uring from your bladder. They do need some fluid so they can get more accurate pictures.
I have worked in the radiology field and have had a few pelvic sono's for cysyts. It is physically painless, but it made me feel very uncomfortable, mentally, for other reasons. I wish you luck. Jen |

Try calling before you go because they were running extremely late when they did mine. I had to become pretty hysterical before they rushed me in (none too soon). I had both types of ultrasounds while I was there. Neither hurt (however the external one pushed on my FULL bladder something fierce - that was a little painful).
From what I understand an ultrasound is a normal thing for them to require especially if things are not "right" there. Good luck!
