Very lucky that NOTHING IS BROKEN..but seem to be having a strange problem & not sure if it's serious or not.
Friends dogs barked at the other horses....those horses took off in a spook which causes the horses we were riding to spook. Huge sideways lunge & took off in the sideways direction, leaving me in the air in the place where the initial spook happened. Couldn't recover with half-haults to get the horses mind back because my mind had not been there at the moment it happened in the first place. Found myself with my leg over the saddle & standing in the other stirup & just didn't feel that recovery was possible at that point. Soooooooo.....I landed on the ground on my back just around where my waist is.....the jar was amazing. I sat there for a couple of minutes trying to regain my mind & body & assess if there was something that might be a break or anything serious that would keep me from wanting to move. Back around the area of my waist really throbbed & eek, must have jarred my bladder (how embarrassing) cause I ended up with wet pants & not from the ground I landed on. Friends husband came back with the horse I was riding (the most beautiful Friesian you can imagine). I finally got up on my feet & started to walk....no problem but could really feel the shaken up area in my body. Walked back to my friends house & got a clean pair of undies & riding pants & was feeling better at that point. Could move without any problem....just stiff to bend & lift my leg.....but got myself back onto the horse & we had a wonderful WALK for our ride.....the joggle of the posting trot when I tried it was a bit uncomfortable so just stuck with several miles of walking today....only our 2nd ride getting ready for the endurance clinic anyway. We had lunch & I drove home to get a nice HOT shower to see about helping the stiffness I knew was setting in. Shower was around 5pm......layed down on my bed & fell asleep for about an hour.....bit of headache (which I have constant migraines anyway & am on pain meds for that.....so thought with the strong pain meds I was on....I really shouldn't feel any serious pain other than something that might be serious.....it's really just throbbing that is going on with my back just above my waist. Woke up around 8pm & started working on my diary cards for my DBT group in the morning. Noticed that I was feeling hot, so I took my temperature.....it was all the way up to 101.8 & throbbing head a bit more than before I fell asleep. Don't think I have a concussion as I didn't land anywhere close to my head. I wasn't sick or feeling bad before this...like coming down with the flu or anything....not sure where the temperature is coming from. Not sure if bruised kidneys could cause the temp. Will have to keep a check on myself......strange feeling living alone when things like this happen. I took some ibuprofen, but think the bottle of it is old....not sure if it's even good anymore. No blood in the urnine (sorry about the TMI). I have been drinking water with some ice in it to try to cool down but hasn't helped.....guess the ibuprofen is kicking in a little...temp dropped by 1 degree.....heading downstairs to the kitchen for some ice cream......craving something cool to eat right now. Hoping to feel better tomorrow for my DBT group & have to drive into the big city 45 minutes away so I can pick up my prescription that the manufacture has been messing up providing. Maybe pain specialist will have some knowledge, but don't have an appointment until next week. Ribs feel a bit twisted, but no bruise like pain there. Will stay up to get the DBT homework done for tomorrow (always wait until last minute ......duh), feed the dogs & head for bed. Haven't been sleeping good lately, but really feel tired...hopefully a good sleep will help me feel better tomorrow. Had plans of coming home after riding & getting some real house work done & something really accomplished.....sort of messed up those plans for that.....but there's always tomorrow & then with that tomorrow always has a tomorrow too. It was a beautiful day for riding today though.....spring is here. The wind wasn't as bad as it gets in the California desert where I rode before moving here. Anyone had experience with this sort of injury to the back area from any other kind ....any input would be welcome......however....giving up riding isn't an option. Falls & learning from them how NOT TO FALL THE NEXT TIME are just a part of riding....just hope they don't happen too often or end up serious with anything broken.

Please get checked out! going to sleep was dangerous, it sounds like you have a concusion. If you hit hard enough to be wet you hit hard enough to do serious internal damage. PLEASE get checked out and check back in...
Then we can chat about Frisians!

I agree. Better safe than sorry. Please go to the ER tonight, instead of going to sleep. Let them make sure you are okay. Please keep us posted.

I usually do the Epsom Salt bath thing. And stiffness and pain usually only kick in the next day.
Sounds like a pretty bad fall, and a friesian is NOT a small horse! I'd rather you go get things checked out. A jar like that can cause damage, and you don't want to wait a few days to find that out. When you try avoid a fall, your muscles tense and you do get slightly more hurt. Please don't down-play the accident; I've fallen off plenty more times tan I can remember, including off racehorses, and I haven't had symptoms like that. |

Eskie lover please check in if you can and let us know you are sore but ok (Not that I want you to be sore... just seems unavoidable after a fall like that)

thank you all......sorry I couldn't get back before this.
Had a Dr's appointment today after my DBT group this morning that I slowly got out of bed & drove to. Nothing broken.....the trauma of the fall can cause the temperature.....go figure. Temp was back to normal in the morning. Knew I didn't have an infection & wasn't sick. Interesting how the body reacts to a trauma to the body like that. Already have problems with constant migraine problem, so the jar to the body just jarred the migraine & brought it back up to the surface. Wouldn't be a problem if I wasn't having problems getting my pain medications because of an FDA issue with it......grrrrr.....something I have posted about in the meds forum. Usually falls that have nothing broken take about a week to recover from if I do nothing to irritate it more like I have in the past. After one fall I thought was nothing also, I came home & rode my lawn tractor & mowed several acres of land....ended up with back spasms.....so not going to do anything stupid like that this time. Just some stretching to keep it from getting so stiff. Unfortunately, I don't have a working bathtub....only a huge walkin shower. Don't have a way to fix the bathtub at this point....so just start & end the day with hot showers. Didn't get a chance to lay down until 5pm tonight & crashed in bed & fell asleep.....good healing time for the body....always feel better after a good sleep which is something I haven't been getting lately.....this is helping for that at least. Will see what the next month has in hold for me....not a real happy camper at the moment.....at least there is nothing broken with that kind of pain to deal with.

Great news to hear there's no major damage! Now just allow your body time to heal properly

(((eskielover))) - so sorry to hear about your bad fall - thank God nothing serious. Falling from a horse can cause serious injuries. My friend has a horse and she has fallen twice - once the horse landed partially on her. She still isn't afraid to ride. I hope you feel better soon

It is kind of crazy how we keep on riding no matter but it's the wonderful feel of being IN the saddle that keeps me going along with the bond with my horse. The lady whose horse I was riding has actually broken her back on a fall & had a bad broken wrist that needed surgery.....yes, there can definitely be serious injuries.....but we keep going for some reason. Don't know how it relates to being a risk taker in the first place????
I haven't ridden since I got back on that day however & probably won't again until I get my pain medication situation for my migraines straightened out & they are back available in the pharmacy. It's just another good reason for allowing my body to recover before riding again instead of pushing it. It's still very sore especially by the end of the day of when I really try to do any major activity. Been laying in bed & sleeping whenever I doze off.....helps control the soreness also. I have lost count of the number of falls I have had actually. Only 2 serious ones. One I fractured my hip & didn't know it & it didn't show up in the xray in the ER that night....but an xray & bone scan showed it up a month later. The other was just a concussion & sore shoulder. My horse was injured worse than I was on that fall, so wasn't riding for a long time after that. My first fall was back in college in my equitation class.....horse was figiting....instructor said...use your crop.....over my horses ears I flew. Almost 30 years later needed a neck fusion because of that....but nothing bothered me at the time...never knew I had whiplash from it.

How are you feeling lately (((eskie))? I know usually people who have accidents feel worse a few days later once stiffness settles in. Was there any blood in your urine at all - with a fall like that you can get bruised kidneys.

Just saw this post, Debbie, and it brought me back to my only fall from a horse when I was 15...had 2 compression fractures in my back and boy, was I in a world of hurt. Am so glad that you didn't fracture anything...sometimes the times you hurt worse are the times you fall but don't break anything...hope you are feeling better now...I have always wanted to ride a Friesian, they are gorgeous horses, I always have had Morgans, which are beautiful horses that I wish I still had...quite a few of our Morgans were typy and won their futurities and went on to win in other divisions as well...oh those were the days...I miss them all so much...but can't really have a horse in an apartment, and I don't have the money for renting a stall...so will have to wait until I find a house in the country where I can finally have my Morgans again...that won't be anytime soon...so enjoy some of the times you ride for me when you get back to riding...
