Alright.. I've been ill since the start of the year so its meant I haven't been able to keep up my old active lifestyle. Last week I went to the gym for the first time and I think i've done something to my shoulder. I was lifting weights and felt fine while doing it, but around 3-4 hours afterwards i started to get a burning/searing pain and like a dull ache? Well.. Its been about 4-5 days now and my shoulder is now quite purple and very swollen. I'm not much of a fuss maker so I was going to wait until Tuesday when I can see a doctor but does anyone know what the issue is likely to be or how to soothe it until then? I've tried ice and warmth but neither of them have helped. Its interfering with my sleep and i cant get comfortable whatever i do, using that particular arm is a pain in the *** at the moment as well.
Thanks for any help. |

Can you take a ride to the Urgent Care? That is what they are there for...no use suffering, my dear.
I hope you feel better! ![]() |

You badly tore a muscle and also damaged a tendon or ligament. The swelling and purple bruising are secretions from the tear and the body attempting to repair itself. Unfortunately, this isn't something that's going to heal in a few days. Generally, it will take a few weeks to a month or more depending on the severity. If you notice any small bulges around the area that hurts, it means that muscle had contracted almost into a ball because it's only partially connected. Worse case scenario is when it's completely unconnected, which I've had happen before and it required surgery on my entire arm.

Thank you both for the advice, I went to A&E this morning and i've done a bit of a number on myself. I've injured my rotator cuff and torn some things pretty much what you said Ox (Coming to you for advice in future!). I've got my shoulder strapped up, some painkillers and it looks like its back to physio for me, but luckily surgery doesn't seem to be the bigger option!
