I have constant recurring sinus infections about 30 or so a year. When I got my tonsils out the doc said I have the most deviated septum he's ever seen. He thinks that's what causes my horrible allergies and constant infections. He wanted me to have surgery to correct it right away but I have put it off for years.
It's October 24th and I'm on my 38th sinus infection this year. There were only about 10 days between this one and the last one. So I'm ready to bite the bullet and get the surgery. I'd like to hear from anyone who's had a similar surgery. Did you have to spend time in the hospital or was it outpatient? How bad did it hurt? How long did it take to heal? How long did it hurt? Did you have to miss work? Was it worth it? I hate doctors and hospitals and really hate being in extra pain. I have enough already without adding to it on purpose! But I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired ![]() |

I had endoscopic sinus surgery in January 2000 for recurrent sinus infections and a deviated septum. It was done outpatient and I missed a week of work. Since the surgery, I have had maybe three or four sinus infections. Before surgery, I would get one I as soon as I went off the antibiotic. It worked well for me and I would definitely have it again. Now for the bad news. The recovery is worse than the surgery(at least in my case). Lots of blood drainage in my throat(for weeks after surgery) along with general discomfort. My doctor did not pack my nose after surgery. When my wife had it done, they put tampons in each nostril for packing. She said when they pulled out the tampons, it was the worst pain she had ever felt. But her recovery was not as painful or drawn out as mine. Best of luck.

Thank you. So it sounds like packing is the way to go but the removal sucks. Were you or your wife awake when they did it?

No, we were both anesthetized for the surgery.

One of my professors had surgery on his sinuses due to numerous sinus infections. Afterward, he also wound up in a nasty car accident requiring surgery, then got sick. Overall, he was unable to work for almost 1 academic year but he additional situations, so you may not be off for as long.

Thank you both. I go in Tuesday for my consultation. No matter what I'm having the surgery. I figure there's no way that the surgery could be worse than being sick more days of the year than I'm healthy.
