Metabolic acidosis, due to the imbalance of the bodies buffering system and clearance of acid, it can resolve itself without medical intervention at times. However, it depends on how your tested values were that would determine treatment and monitoring of these values should continue over time for any changes.
I am not familiar with topiramate being the cause of it, (very limited knowledge there); however, in knowing how dehydrating this medication is, dehydration can be a cause of metabolic acidosis but is not the only cause. Perhaps these links might help. I wish you all the best, find the answers you are looking for and hope you feel better real soon. ![]() Metabolic acidosis: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia Medscape: Medscape Access

Metabolic acidosis can have numerous causes and some are very serious requiring immediate treatment depending on the severity/cause. What has led you to believe that you may have metabolic acidosis?

a lot of symptoms, blood test show'd dehydration and issues with my kidney function and although I've been working to drink more my kidney funtion became worse. I've been on the topiramate since january and have had nothing but problems since being on it(for cluster headaches), I've started to taper off of it, problem is, my dr told me he wouldn't see or check me again unless I go see a therapist about my anxiety and stress(never been to one before). I'm a little freaked about my kidney function and I think with holding treatment is kind of messed up. Anyway, I just wanted to know if it could resolve itself with time or if it has to be treated medicaly as I believe its a result of the topiramate. I hope this isn't too confusing

topimax increases chance of acidity in your body called metabolic acidosis, it lowers bicarb, the "base" of your body, which can also aggravate renal impairment
When you got your bloodwork, did you tell them your current meds? I don't know when you went, but what did they say? I would also taper, lower, or even stop topimax . It might be secondary to the med, so it should resolve Metabolic acidosis requires monitoring at a clinic/hospital, because it involves various electrolytes. The only thing I can think of that your body can do on its own is hyperventilate, to give off that excess acidic carbon o2, making your body more alkali. sit upright to help your lungs out. What exactly was your blood gas values when you got checked if it's ok to ask. If it was far from your baseline I would imagine they would tell you something about topimax. Do you have diabetes? if you start breathing faster and having arrythmias, go to ED. |

Honestly, he showd me but I don't remember, I just knew he said it was worse. I have tapered of the topiramate altogether and my breathing has improved. Strange thing is, this last appointment was over two weeks ago, I suddenly got a phone call early Friday morning from one of the nurses( I was driving through georgia on my way to florida from central mass on a family vacation) she told me he wanted me to cut my lisinopril in half and test my blood pressure for two weeks. When I asked her why, all she said was your blood test came back abnormal. Which still left me confused, why over two weeks later? My blood pressure was trending hight even before the tpiramate and more after( last day on it was the 11th) I went out and bought a bp machine to test as he's asked and noticed its been on the low side now.(100-110 over 65-75). I'm confused, I've been working hard to drink more but have lost some ground down here park hopping everyday. I'm also on aplenzin, hydrochlorothiazide, lisinopril and very recently off topiramate. Thank you |
