It looks like the nail got bumped pretty badly. Did you drop a 20 lb weight on it? It'll probably be bumpy for awhile. Remember that it takes a year for big toenails to grow out.

didnt drop anything, just hiking with not so good shoes. toenail keep bumping for 4 hours.

1 year? but from that pic, it only took 1 month to grow that small piece of nail. i would expect 7-9 months.

Nails are strange and react to trauma oddly. For example, totally irrelevant yet fascinating, if you have had a severe flu or infection, you can feel ridges in your finger nails (usually side to side) and toe nails (top to bottom). This happens because the body focused it's "army" else where and you didn't, for the time, grow any nails or hair.

As for how your toenail is growing in; get it checked out ASAP. It can easily turn into an ingrown toenail which doesn't seem like a big deal, but can lead to extreme pain, infection, and infection of the blood.

Thanks for the update.

I bruised both (big) toenails about a year ago, apparently not quite as badly as you did. Mine turned brown but didn't fall off. All the brown is gone by now and the nails seem to be growing into more or less their normal shape.

I went through a few pairs of shoes before I arrived at the solution. For me it was (1.) longer shoes for hiking than for just walking around town; (2.) mid-height, not low, shoes whenever I expected to be walking downhill; and (3.) tightening the laces before each long descent, maybe once or twice more on the way down, and anytime I started to notice my toes getting jammed.

I've found that tightening shoelaces isn't as simple as it sounds. If I don't work the slack out of the laces from front to back, it doesn't work itself out very well as I walk. The laces can be too tight next to the knot and way too loose at the front, and stay that way for miles.
Thanks for this!
