Beth,

I don't know the details or even wether he had a bypass or band type surgery, but a friend of my father's died, shortly after his stomach reduction surgury. Surgeries are best avoided in general as they all carry multiple risks, done well they can save and perhaps transform lives(I think I heard somewhere).

I think you should talk to your Dr. and T asap about this and serious supervised alternatives.

If you think you need to go ahead with it, 'get your affairs in order' , regarding will, living will, power of medical attorney, and all that stuff. I don't know what's best or wisest for you, just be informed and ready for any out come.

Hope whatever works well for you~Down Gastric Bypass, Lapband?

i was married to a surgeon for 16 years. he considers the surgery as being very, very major and not really an "elective" surgery. he won't do the surgery.

I had the surgery...I had Gastric Bypass. I am doing wonderful on it. I started out at 442 and am now 281. Yes I still have a long way to go but look at where I started out at. As with all surgeries there is a risk especially because we are obese when we start out. There are some people that shouldn't have the surgery because they can't follow direction well. If you do what you are told and have a good surgeon you will do fine. The only problem I have is I'm not real regular if you know what I mean but other than that I am doing great. I feel I have to stand up for all of us in the world that had it done because not everyone had the major complications. Not everyone gains the weight back. I agree that therapy needs to be done before and after the surgery and that is why most insurance companies require a psych eval before your surgery. The insurance companies don't take this lightly if you are approved they think you can do it. I say if you are ready do it!!

buggie, is there some thing that prevents you from eating the high fiber foods like oatmeal? (something from the surgery?)

I can eat anything I want except sugar. I'm not supposed to have sugar but I eat it once in awhile anyway. I take fiber pills along with my many vitamins. For my vitamins I take calcium, iron, B12 and a multivitamin. I was taking 2 Flintstone vitamins but after awhile they made me gag so I take a prescription one now.
