I saw this site explaining colored toenails. Maybe it can get you some ideas.

Another possibility is that during the hike your toes got jammed against the inside of your shoe, causing a bruise under the nail. This is most likely to happen when you're walking downhill. Prevention includes making sure that your toenails are cut short enough, that the shoes you hike in are long enough for your feet, and that they're laced tightly enough to keep your foot from slipping forward in the shoe.
I don't know how long it normally takes for a bruise like that to clear up. If you're concerned that it's not improving fast enough you might want to consult a podiatrist. |

thats exactly what happened.
when going downhill, my toe, toenails, and some foot fingers were bumping in the front of the shoes repetitively, causing damage and turning the toenail into black color. but my question is, why its turning light green now, and in addition, black part is reduced significantly. if only i could post image now, i would. |

The bruise is probably changing color. Chances are the nail will lift off where the bruise is. Go and see a podiatrist to get it checked out. My nail has bruised and is lifting off. My podiatrist is trimming it down. Nails can be tricky things.

but my toenail is still "sticked" to the skin, if i try to remove it, it hurts. i dont think its going to be removed automatically, i think it will heal by itself, and over time, the black and green part will fade away and my toenail color will be back to normal. |

That happened to me and my toenails have grown out and as they have, the bruises have grown out along with them. I trim them and slowly, I'm getting rid of the bruises. Mine turned green also. I'd like to add that I had my Dr. check them just to be sure my toes were ok. If you're in doubt go get checked.
I wish you well. Jan ![]()

It's probably a healing bruise, so try not to worry too much! If you start feeling a lot of heat around the area, and a lot of pain that feels like pressure, get it checked out as soon as possible.
Take care, dear.

My nail took months to come right off the first time. Don't try and pull it off. Leave it alone. My bruise is taking forever to come out. I am seeing a podiatrist for other reasons though. Our toenails grow much slower that our finger nails. Please see a podiatrist for proper nail care if you get concerned.

Aww, I've seen toenails before. I even have some of my own.
![]() The brown one looks to me like your basic bruised toenail. I haven't had one of mine turn green but that's one of the colors that bruises sometimes turn while they're clearing up. I guess if one nail got bruised less severely, it might follow a different course of healing. Here's a Wikipedia article on the condition and here's one from a podiatrist's website. |

in the 2nd picture, can u see the small white horizontal line, upper left side of toenail... that is actually a crack..
it is now somewhat loose, i can actually lift the toenail from that side. ![]() |

One is a bruise..... but the green one may need to be trimmed to stop it from catching on things. Please go and see a podiatrist. Trying to fix this on your own may lead to more problems.
Stop lifting the toe nail. Leave it to a professional. |

I've never actually lost a toenail but my guess is that new ones will (eventually) grow in. As possum said, please do look after your tootsies.

Many runners lose their big toenails, too. Were your hiking shoes/boots tight? In any case, the toe that had the black nail looks good. There's normal nail growing underneath. I couldn't open the picture of the green one, but green does sound like a fungal infection. I had a few green nails one time after wearing acrylic nails for a long time. All I had to do was put some topical stuff on it (don't remember what it was) and not wear acrylic nails or nail polish until the green color went away.
I would definitely see a podiatrist about the green toenail. You don't want the green stuff spreading to your other toenails. Keep your feet clean and dry. Change socks often or wear sandals. Wash the toe with the green nail last. Those were the instructions my podiatrist gave me when I had toenail fungus. |

i was hiking with shoes which was the same size of my casual shoes, i asked my fellow hikers, they said i should've bought shoes with extra inch or 2 for protection. (im not sure if this is reasonable? coz extra inch or 2 in shoe size is not comfortable when walking/hiking?)
EDIT: i actually took a look at the green toenail (by lifting a little bit), the green thing is sticked to the toenail, not to the skin.. so im fine. (same as my black toenail, the black thing was sticked to the nail itself, not the skin. Last edited by ineedhelp0335; Oct 20, 2013 at 10:19 PM. |

Hi, again! To be on the safe side, I suggest you go ahead to a doctor. I know you have been worrying about these toenails for a good while.
