WEll here I am up and am wide awake, very itchy all over and am trying to distract my arms from scratching which is really hard. It is worse in bed where it is warm...makes me itch more. I have been using many different kinds of products: wednesday got a steroid shot friday: started on steroid pills using a steroid lotion called beta val, and an ointment called diflorasone diacetate, benadryl spray and benadry pills and allegra pills during the day.

all i want to do is scratch!
ugh!

any advice would be kindly appreciated!

Hi, bizi...

You've done about all you can...it really sucks!

Here's one thing you need to know, though. The steroids they give you for poison ivy can set off a mother of a manic episode in bipolars... my ex wound up spending a night in jail after she WOULD NOT stop hitting me. (I didn't mean for her to go to jail, but if you call them, somebody's going to jail).

Anyway, be on the lookout for any of the symptoms of mania, and I hope you get better soon.

thank you Dave,
Up late last night, came home from work early and had a 4 hour nap.
which I needed so badly.
I picked up some lidocaine gel...hoping that numbs the areas enough so that I can get to sleep.
need to time everything right...sleeping pills, benadryl, cortisone lotion then this new gel...geesh what a pain in the arse.
The worry about when is it going to get better and it is really not that bad...why doesn't it stop spreading.
that is what is worrying me now.
I don't need this stressor in my life.
thanks again
your a sweetie.

Oh bizi!!! I'm so sorry about your situation! You are right, you don't need an added stressor! Have you noticed any bad side effects from the steroid? Hope you're all healed up soon!!! {{{{HUGS}}}}

I think the steroids were also keeping me up and contributing to my problems of not sleeping. I am tapering off them and done in a couple of days.
I think the poison ivy is a tad better today...
yippie!

geesh I used enough stuff last night....
and my case is not bad...I feel sorry for folks who get it terribly bad.
I want mine to go away as soon as possible.
the lidocaine gel helped alot last night.

Oatmeal baths. (Or use Aveeno) If you use oatmeal, put oatmeal in a sock, not directly into the bath water, or you will have a mess. Oatmeal will soothe the itching.

Also, you must wash your sheets and clothes separately from any other sheets and clothing... poison ivy is an oil and you can contaminate everything you or your skin touches, and the sheets , and clothes you wear will also transfer the oil and contaminate. It's a real tough battle.

Wear soft gloves to sleep....any scratching then might not do much damage.

Wash you hands and be very careful to keep hands away from face. If the rash goes down your nasal passages and or into your throat, it can be life threatening.

I'm sorry you are suffering. Drink lots of water, and try to keep your bedroom cooler than normal to help you sleep. Good wishes.

Bizi,

Call your family Dr. He/she may be able to give you a cortizone shot that will help with all the symptoms. I'm so sorry you're suffering with poison ivy. It's nasty!

Hugs,

Jan

thank you for your replies.
I have already done the shot and the pills unless I need to do that again.
So the oils continue weeks later now?
This has been a terrible interuption to my sleep.
I am a zombie at times like today....jstu really interferring in my day to day life...and my case is not that bad from what I have been reading about.
the itching at night is so bad, the worst part...I can ignore it during the day...at night there is nothing to ignore, the lidocaine gel is not helping that much...there is a site that suggested using a hot hair blow dryer...I was nervous about trying that.
Parts of the rash is better others is worse...It has been 2 weeks...so maybe I am half way thru this.
sigh
thanks for listening to me whine....
