Got my weekly allergy shot today and ended up having a severe allergic reaction. The doctors/nurses injected me with epinephrine and gave me Benedryl liquid and another liquid. I have two epipens on hand but because Epi is light sensitive I can't see that the liquid in it is still clear. (I worry i may have left it in subpar cold conditions so i need to check). If i open it i'm afraid it may start talking and not be able to be recapped (even though i would not remove the part where ghe needle is). Has any or does anyone have one of these pens and know if i can open it to check the color or should i just carry both pens around jic?

Hi tealBumblebee
I'm sorry you had to go through that. I don't know the answer to this and others wouldn't either. Is there a way you could call a nurse hotline from either your insurance company or if that is not an option could you call your local ER and ask a nurse this question? It would be safer to know this information from them. I wish you the best. ![]() |

I had a similar question with an epi-pen that had been in sub-par conditions and my doctor told me not to tamper with it, to carry it with me, it probably still worked, but the best option was to refill the prescription because JIC can mean saving my life.
I've had anaphalactic shock three times, from three different things. If necessary, I'd dumpster dive for aluminum cans in order to get enough money to make sure I had working epi-pens. If you have any doubts at all -- any -- make sure you have a good epi. I'm so sorry you had such a bad reaction. It's scary and far worse than what most people think of as an allergic reaction. I also carry Benedryl with me all the time, too. |

Ok so update for anyone who has an Auvi-Q epipen. You CAN take it out of the case. It will start talking and say "if not ready to use replace this in outer case". Do NOT pull off the red tip as that will activate the pen, but you can take the "brick" out of the case. There is a small window that shows you the liquid epinephrine where you can occasionally check for color and clarity and replace. Thanks for you guys help!

Thank you for the update! I've been carrying my Epi-Pen and wondering about how to check if it was still good.
