Cytomel was started because depression was NOT getting any better. About a week later I felt like a new woman with energy, sleeping regular instead of all day, finally gave a darn about what I looked like or how people thought of me.
After a month on cytomel, the symptoms are returning. My psych put me on this and then set an appointment for 3 months. I told him probs were rising back up so he did a TSH lab. Normal results.
Every woman on my Mom's side of the family all have had some kind of thyroid trouble. Some get away with synthroid, some docs think they are nuts and my sister had Hashimotos and my aunt died with thryroid cancer but nobody would do anything because her levels were "normal". SO ARE MINE! ALWAYS ARE. SO WERE THEIRS, ALWAYS WERE. Now they are dead and my sister is losing the other side of her thyroid because the "dr" said since they took the one side out that she would be fine. Stupid seems to run rampant among dr.s huh?

thats sad! i have hypothroidism and gained over 50 pounds after i had my son and can't seem to lose the weight i gained from having a baby. you should be on synthroid or another thyroid pill. i'm not a doctor, but it seems to me someone should do something with a past like your family members had. good luck

Get an appt with an endocrinologist. They are trained in this area. A psych dr should NOT be treating your thyroid.
You need more than a TSH level done.

It is imperative to have not only TSH Test done, as it most often comes back as normal range. With any suspicion of thyroid disfunction TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3 & Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) are all important. An endoclinologist will most likely do all these tests and also reflex tests.

I had the same experience with synthroid. Actually I got lot of extra energy for the whole first year. Then they had to up the dosage but I never had the good effect back. I never went back to the dragging I had before meds but the normal energy I only had one year. Thyroids are tricky. Here you get "stabilized" and then they let you go to GP even if you don't feel stabilized.
