I accidentally cut my finger and had to go get help for it. They gave me a tetanus shot. It's been three days and my arm is still swollen, hot and red. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do about it?

I was washing my hands in the bathroom sink and my hand slipped and I cut my finger on my razor. I couldn't get the bleeding stopped and went to the local "Doc In A Box". The Dr. cauterized the wound to stop the bleeding. The cauterization hurt like the dickens and yesterday the place opened back up and bled a bit. I'm not going back to let them cauterize it again. No way!

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thank you!

Jan

Jan wrap your arm in a cold wet towel. change it often. it takes the heat and itch out along with any swelling. and call the dr in the morning

i would also be careful in taking any advil or ibphrone(sp?) for the pain as it is a blood thinner....also keep it elevated if at all possible.....

Reaction To Tetnus Shot - May trigger Reaction To Tetnus Shot - May trigger I love that smiley with the thermometer!

The swelling was down a lot today and it's not so hot thanks to Be's advice. It's still a little red and swollen, but nothing in comparison to yesterday. A little tiny seed like thing came out of it today. I thought that was weird.

I no longer feel like I have an upper respiratory infection or lung infection, so I didn't call the Dr. If it gets worse I will, but I thought it was so much better that it didn't warrent a call.

(((((((((((((((((( Friends ))))))))))))))))))))

Thank you so much for caring. Just knowing someone cares means the world to me.

Love and hugs,

Jan

((((((((((( Be )))))))))))

Thank you!

BTW, the nurse told me to be sure and write down the date I had the shot and tape it to the fridge. That way in an emergency, the date will always be handy.

Hugs,

Jan

I wish you had called the doctor sooner, but glad you spoke to someone. Make sure it's put on the front of your medical chart. I am also allergic to tetnus, and that can be a sticking point with some doctors as they assume everyone can take it. You need to also find out the kind of ingredients in the shot, as I think there are different kinds? (I may be confused here) but check so you know how much of what you got, and make note on the kind and length of reaction.

There are in fact three varities of tetnus vaccine available in the US. (Gracey worked at a lab through Grad school)

What came out of your arm is basically "waste material" that was part of the suspension for for tetnus antibody. Dont' worry about it. Some people absorb it, some dont. It does give away what vaccine was used however. . .a very CHEAP one. But I'm sure you got charged $100 + for it. Medical care in this country sucks.

Thank you for explaining it, Gracey. The big knot has broken down into smaller ones. It's not nearly as sore.

I think it's cool you worked in a lab. Reaction To Tetnus Shot - May trigger
