OK, Not to long ago I colapsed. I thought it was stress and fatigue from caring for my difficult at times husband. i have been feeling very very dizzy and tired and run down for weeks. I collapsed again a few days ago. I decided to go to the doc shortly afterwards. My blood sugar was in the toilet. The doc could not believe I was standing there and not passed out on the floor. I have to go back on the diabetic diet that I was on for gestational diabetes. They did a 3 hour glucose tolerance test. They said I am hypoglycemic. Does this mean I am going to become diabetic later in life. This happened to my mom a few years before she became diabetic. Same with both grandmothers as well.

i'm no expert but I don't think it is a precursor to later developing diabetes - but instead of worrying about things that are beyond your control, you should focus on the things that you can control to prevent getting diabetes - having a healthy diet, and exercising, I think you are right to be concerned about developing diabetes given the family history.

One of the most common reasons for an otherwise healthy person to become hypoglycemic is from drugs - commonly alcohol
There is also an extensive list of rather rare causes.

Does your dr intend on investigating the cause of your hypoglycemia?

I was diagnosed as hypoglycemic when I was in college. It can be life threatening but it is also quite easy to treat. My understanding is that the chances of developing diabetes may be higher but it is not an automatic 'one comes before the other.'

My neice is hypoglycemic. When you feel dizzy, drink some milk and eat a graham cracker. It really helps her.

(((((( Twirls )))))))))

You are most welcome!

I was with my neice in the ER one time when she got shaky because she hadn't eaten. The nurse gave her the milk and the graham cracker and it took no time at all for her to perk right and feel better.

Hugs,

Jan
