I have had to have cysts removed from my under arms. My Dr. told me I need to change to a deoderant that does not have an antipersperant in it. Do any of you know where I can find some?
Thanks!!!! Jan

Jan,
This is probably available at Wal-Mart too. Look for aluminum free. That's what makes a product an antiperspirant. Adidas Walgreens |

I use Tom's Natural deodorant because I don't want the aluminum, but I have to say that I don't think it (or any deodorant) works well. Antiperspirant is so much more effective. But, probably harmful, so I'm just going to have to live with reapplying deodorant twice a day unless someone invents something better. I've also tried the crystal thing in the purple container. Didn't work any better than Tom's, but is messier to apply.

Jan, Arm and Hammer makes "natural" deodorant with baking soda and without aluminum -- you might try that.

Thank you so very, very much. I so appreciate your help. I am so OCD about wetness and odor. I even use unscented deoderant so I don't smell anything. It looks like my OCD is going to have to make a few adjustments! Hugs to all! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I'm ambivalent about deoderant...
I sweat a lot. Feel like I'm a waterworks in the summer. That being said, I'm not BO stinky (stale sweat) even though I am sweaty. I'm not sure that anti-perspirants actually make me perspire less. I seem to perspire the same whether I wear them or not. I'm not sure that deoderants actually make me smell less, either. If I shower twice daily then I don't tend to smell... If I do notice a smell I ask other people 'can you smell me?' and they always say 'nope'. I figure I can smell me before other people can because my armpits are closer to my nose than they are to other peoples noses. You can get moist wipes that are handy for a quick wipe in the bathroom in the afternoon. I try and remember to do that for my face in the afternoons (to try and help my pores stay unclogged). Maybe they would help remove sweat from your pits? Maybe I'm unusual... But then I have been involved in a couple discussion board conversations on this now... Do people really find that using deoderant helps them out or is it more that we have been conditioned to use it (and believe that it helps) even though... It doesn't really????? |

I can say absolutely without doubt that Secret Platinum Unscented does stop the perspiration and the odor. It's the best I've ever found.
When I had to wear the clam shell brace for almost a year I discovered what worked. However, not perspiring isn't worth having cysts that hurt under my arms, nor is it worth the pain of surgery to have them removed. Thank you for the wonderful idea about the wipes. That would help a lot. It's definately an interesting topic. Jan

Yes, there are natural ways to do what the people who want to charge you a lot do:

Update: I got the Adidas stuff. It works better than Tom's, although it contains a bunch of chemicals that may or may not be less harmful than aluminum. Who knows? But it works - thanks for the tip Petunia!

Thanks Perna - the package has the ingredients, too, but I don't really understand what any of them are. Tom's Natural's ingredients are all things I recognize.
But as my husband always points out, "natural" does not always = healthy. For example, scorpions are natural...

Right, it's the aluminum based chemical that causes the problems.
Solid antiperspirants are made with several ingredients, including wax, a liquid emollient and an active-ingredient compound. It's the active ingredient that gives antiperspirants their sweat-blocking power. All antiperspirants have an aluminum-based compound as their main ingredient. If you look at the back of an antiperspirant container, the aluminum-based compound is always the first ingredient listed. Here are a few of the common active ingredients: Aluminum chloride Aluminum zirconium tricholorohydrex glycine Aluminum chlorohydrate Aluminum hydroxybromide Ipersonally use Herbal Clear, with aloe, made by 21st Century Healthcare out of Tempe AZ. The few times I use an antiperspirant is when I'm in uniform. ![]() Sweat itself is odorless. It's the bacteria on the skin that causes the odor. If you drink more water, and wash often (yeah, like at work? ![]()

Uhm, I know this is going to sound totally gross, but how does one not feel sticky when there is perspiration? Is there a way to stop it without using antiperspirant?

I used to use Shower to Shower, which is a deodorant powder. (

I find that wearing cotton helps keep the odor down. Polyester and other synthetics somehow promote the sweat odor. I use an unscented antiperspirant daily. I don't like the smell of deodorants or scented antiperspirants. I think I would rather smell the odor of sweat than of a cloying deodorant.
I remember when I was a teen, that there were these armpit pads called "dress shields" that you would wear if you were worried about sweating in your pretty dress and embarrassing yourself with those telltale pit stains. Don't know if they make those anymore. They can be reused many times, just wash in between uses. (I haven't heard of them for years, though. May have gone the way of the horse and buggy.)
