Well ever since I began taking a off-brand of Anafranil I have had major constipation, lately its gotten worse, lasting up to a week or more only having fibers and elaxatives helping. I've told my pdoc some months ago , we ended up increasing it! Anyway...can anyone verify this med Anafranil does cause constipation....? I'm a bit worried only being 17 and all....I go to my pdoc tomorrow to hopefully get off of it and get on something else..... Constipation and Anafranil. this was embarssing first time publicly speaking about this...

Thanks..

i'm not going to comment whether it can or not. but regardless, are you doing everything you can with your diet - your other post indicated that you may not have a diet with much fiber - lots of fruit and veg and wholegrain cereals, prunes, the good old bran for breakfast

there is also no 'normal' number of times you have to poo per week. as long as your poo is soft and you don't need to strain; but obviously if you have discomfort and strain to push out hard poos, that isn't good (hope you don't mind me being a bit more graphic, but I thought it might help you realise that everyone poo's and it is not something to be embarrassed to talk about - just remember your doctor farts and wipes his butt just like you do.

Hi Moon can't tell u much about anafranil...But healthy bowel habits include up to 2 or more a day. Get the ingredients for that shake i posted earlier it will help. It has everything in it to help regulate too. Prunes i'd stay away from if your having Diarrhea at least for now. Whole grains, Oatmeal, crudiferous vegetables and fruits like broccoli and apples.

In bewteen the shakes do salads and lots of veggies and fruits.

When i worked in human services with clients i was a qualified dietician and regulated their diets so dont be afraid to come to me an ask any questions...okay Take care, in the mean time check with doc on the anafranil...I've never heard of that one... Constipation and Anafranil.

The following text is copied from the Anafranil prescribing information and can be verified here.

The most commonly observed adverse events associated with the use of Anafranil and not seen at an equivalent incidence among placebo-treated patients were gastrointestinal complaints, including dry mouth, constipation , nausea, dyspepsia, and anorexia; nervous system complaints, including somnolence, tremor, dizziness, nervousness, and myoclonus; genitourinary complaints, including changed libido, ejaculatory failure, impotence, and micturition disorder; and other miscellaneous complaints, including fatigue, sweating, increased appetite, weight gain, and visual changes.
