Can someone tell me what it means when the vitreous fluid in your eye starts to detach? My relatives won't give me any idea what it means but said let's not talk about this. It's like damnit I'm 23 years old I wanna know what it means. I have always had ot wear glasses or contacts. and mainly have vision in one eye that's doing that, I'm blind in the other. Like I want answers but I'm frustrated and wanna cry too.

Detached retinas are caused when the retina becomes separated from the other layers of the eyeball. Since these areas of the eyeball are responsible for providing the retina with nourishment and support, detached retinas can lead to blindness if not treated. The disorder is relatively uncommon in the United States, with only about one in every 10,000 people suffering from the condition.

I think it means your retina is detatching or is going to; the fluid is the "glue" that holds the layers together (and nutures the retina) and it's possibly leaking to behind your retina and detatching it.

With age, and in my case from an injury, the gel or "vitreous fluid" of the inside of the eye can break loose and cause "floaters." These appear as dark spots that float around and sometimes in front of the visual field. They are harmless unless they attach to the back of the retina. (Which is very rare)

This attachment is a painful experience, can cause detachment of the retina, and can also include something like a blanket being pulled down over your vision in the eye. Get to your opthalmologist immediately, so he can hopefully prevent blindness in the eye.

I have regular eye check ups, every 6 months just for the doctor to keep track of all the floaters I have from my head injury.

Hope this helps! (((hugs))) (Did you google it?)

((((evildouble))))) so sorry your family is not being very helpful to you. i'm blind in one eye, as well (due to birth defect). hopefully you're able to ask and talk with your docs (opthalmalogists) and google it on the internet. i'm pretty confident that you will be able to find plenty of information that way. i did so much googling and searching on the internet when i was a medical mystery to help me find any clues to what was wrong with me. and found so much information, too. it's very educational. anyway, i wish you the best.

This comment almost makes me angry and maybe it's my fault and that I was not detailed enough or what not; I don't know. *Bebop's bee; I have found google to be useless; I do use other sites like webmd.com but there is not always a simple answer and to find something that is legitimate as well is difficult. Please don't take this personally just haven't had therapy in a little over 2 weeks and go twice a week and struggling right now and need to vent and just really need someone to talk to and what not. Don't mind my rambling

Here's one link (but I'm not advocating the herbs) http://www.itmonline.org/arts/floaters.htm

Here's another : http://tinyurl.com/2a6vvd

and : http://www.tedmontgomery.com/the_eye/vitreous.html

Let me know if none of them give you the info you want.

(But honest, I have this problem and see my neuro-opthalmologist for it.)
