Has anyone else felt depressed after surgery?

Last year I had to have surgery to put a plate and pins in my right ankle, after my dog, ran around my legs twice, trapping me, and then took off. I went over like a big tree. Yes, I broke my ankle, and had to be hauled off to the hospital in an ambulance.

Anyway, last year, I think I was so glad to be alive, I don't remember getting depressed afterwards. Oh, I know what else is different, I had my class online to teach. This year not enough students enrolled, so my class was cancelled.

I feel like a dependent child this time, and don't like how I'm feeling.

Let's see, husband was also working last year, so that makes a big difference too.

You guys are wonderful listeners.

hon with all you are going thru right now I think it is perfectly normal to feel depressed. being pretty much homebound like you are you have too much time to sit around and think about the things you feel are wrong in your life right now. ease up on yourself hon. this too shall pass (((hugs)))

Bee,

I've been pretty easy on myself for almost 14 days.

You would be proud of me. I applied for one online teaching position today that I would probably really enjoy teaching.

Post surgery times are a unique time of calm for me and I really enjoy them. But others who might not be so anxious normally, might feel depressed instead.

Maybe it's a lot of things happening at onece, school's over, the one summer class didn't work out, and now another surgery.

Feeling depressed - post foot surgery and I hope you're feeling better soon.

Christina doesn't like surgeries at all... I'm kinda glad to be home afterwards, but it's still a bummer because you get to deal with recuperation... which can be rather boring.

It's been hard having to depend on husband for things. He has been quite good a lot of the time, but then he will tantrum when I ask for some things. I never know which way it is going to go. I guess this is getting on my last nerve. As much as I need him to take care of me, financially we need him to be working. The price of gas is so crazy, and jobs that are close to home are rare. All in all this leaves us in a tough position. I can't even count the number of times I have told him I want to move. No -- he is like a mountain that refuses to move.

I have found myself in a depression after surgery also. I get frustrated too. I think we hype ourselves up so much to go through the surgery, then when it's all said and done, there is somewhat of a let down and we're back to reality again.

I know how the boredom can set in....it stinks for sure. I used to take the time to do some introspective thinking for myself. It was a good time to go through pro's and con's of things I thought I might want to do or change.

I really appreciate everyone's support.

Yes, Sabby, I definitely had adrenaline running to get myself through the surgery. I think living out in the middle of nowhere, where I can't see other people really got on my nerves this past week. I think the pain medication dragged my mood down too.

Then there are the bills that keep on coming. Sigh...

Anyway today I got good news from the doctor. There is no swelling on the foot on which he did the most work. On the other foot, where he removed my inflamed nerve, the incision was red, so he has prescribed some antibiotics for me.

The best news -- I can now shower again!!!!

I can also walk as much as I can tolerate. I still need to keep the surgical sneakers on, b/c his work on my pinky toe involved cutting bone, and the neuroma removal on my right foot required a deep incision.

Regarding my cancelled class this summer, I have been sending out other inquiries to other colleges to make sure I will have as many classes as I want to teach in the Fall.

I really appreciate everyone's caring notes. It really means a lot to me. Feeling depressed - post foot surgery

hon I can't begin to imagine what the cost of gas is going to do to you in the fall. I am so thankful my hubby's job is only 6 miles from home! but geesh even with that we are using a tank at least a week with church and the other things we have to do. good luck with the class search!

So glad you are doing better, EJ! I know you will feel good with being able to walk some and take showers. You'll feel a little more independent.

Take care and don't overdo.

Bee,

Enrollment in my "live" Macroeconomics class at the college where I have been teaching for 2-1/2 years reached 7 yesterday, which is the minimum required number of students. So that's hopeful. Even though it is a monster of a trek there, my boss gives me money towards gas as part of my pay.

The new inquires I'm making with other colleges so far have all been for online classes, so gas won't be an issue. Feeling depressed - post foot surgery
