With today's medicines, if he chooses to take one, he won't have to severely change his diet. But with his other troubles, a good diet is essential. I think this will be tough work for you all, and may require a change in eating habits for the whole family. (You know how men are... LOLOLOL)

I don't know a lot on the subject, but I have a cousin who suffers from it. His mother always said it was sweets that set it off in him. It too affected his toes, and then his whole foot if he did not heed the warning signs.

Could try a google search or the Mayo Clinic site for more information, they have tons of links there to lead you to a good source of information.

Good luck, hope he conquers!
