I'm meant to be in hospital, recuperating from my surgery.

However, I have an infection, which means that I can't have surgery, because of the risk of it spreading to the metal hardware (My spine is going to be fused, but that takes six months to a year to finish, so they use rods to hold it all together until then)

So now, I just have to wait for it to clear up, and then it (should be) fine to go ahead. Then it's one week in hospital, and after that I get to come home.

Thank you all of you.
It's nice to have seen the ward, and met some of the nurses at least.. makes me feel more comfortable.

I know how scary surgery can be. I had neck fusion in 1999 & that definitely had me nervous. It was more scarry than the knee reconstruction I had gone through before they had the arthroscopic surgery to do it.

There isn't a surgery that isn't a bit intimidating, but once it's over & the healing begins, that is when we breathe a sigh of relief & thank God it's all over.

You are in my prayers,
Debbie

Thank you all for your support

Eskie- I'm getting my lower back fused, which reduces a fair bit of movement, but I have to say I'm glad not to get my neck fused!

I have been surprised as I though the neck fusion would reduce my ability to move my neck & it hasn't done that at all. I have to admit that there are times in the humidity of Kentucky that I end up with a very sore neck & need a good hot shower to lessen the pain & sometimes it even crunches a bit, but I am still able to ride my horses & do everything I could before the surgery. Maybe as I get much older, I will see the stiffness setting in more.....time will tell.

I know that good physical therapy after the surgery is of most importance in making sure no scar tissue builds up & movement continues.......just to keep that in mind. I had 6 months of physical therapy after my knee reconstruction & was skiing again within 6 months. I see now over 20 years later, that I do need to continue strengthing exercises as the knee is starting to have problems again when I haven't been exercising to keep up the strength in the muscles.

Make sure you take the physical therapy seriously after your surgery.....it will help with the success of the surgery in the future.

Debbie

Sorry that I didn't see your reply ealier eskie.

Your story is really encouraging. I am definitely going to do as much as I can to regain flexibility and movement.. I want to to lose as little as possible.

It's all been a bit of muddle. My surgeon wants to see me and make sure that I'm ok before going ahead. The best option now seems to be to wait until next summer, so I can get all my exams done first without missing loads and loads.
