Hi,

I had a blood test today at the doctors, not for HIV, it was for things the psychiatrist wanted to check.

The nurse washed her hands, then wiped my arm, the bin thing where they put the needles and everything in after they have been used, there was blood on the top, so when she put the wipe in, she didn't wash her hands again and got the cotton wool ball out.

I asked her to wash her hands again, because of the blood, think she was a bit but she did.
Then she put her gloves on and did it, so I'm a bit worried incase - she got blood on her hand and on the cotton wool, that I had to use to hold over after she took the needle out.

I didn't see any on the cotton wool or her hand or my arm, but maybe a tiny bit could have been there and it got into the mark from the needle and I now have HIV

I did ask her and she said I'd be fine and she obvioulsy seen it on the bin and I told her.

So should I got for an HIV test or will I be ok?

Thanks

Yeah well I guess the nurse could have done something or done that.

I phoned an AIDS helpline and they said I'd be ok, but I don't know

I too would say that you should be OK - as viruses die within a few minutes of being exposed to air, even that of the HIV virus.
Thanks for this!

even though, yeah she should be following protocol all the time, the likelihood of you contracting HIV from that is slim to none. I would quit worrying about it. However, if you're like me you probably wont so go get tested for free. I got mine done at an anonymous and free facility and it took about a week for me to get my results back. So if you do get tested, be prepared to turn into a hypochondriac for a week. I know i did
Thanks for this!

Thanks

I hope so, I phoned the nurse and she said it was carried out right - I don't think it was though.

I'm scared to go for a test - I'm 90% sure it happened, but just in case I'm wrong, I'd worry I got it when I went to get tested for it.
So I'm waiting to see if anything happens.

My psychologist said I'd fine - and everyone else has - so if I don't get any symptoms in a few weeks that should mean I'm ok

You're okay. The virus dies as soon as it hits air.
