So I went to the OB/GYN I have atypical cervix cells. not cancerous, but maybe precancerous. I will not know until the biopsy comes back. This is all from an abnormal pap due to the HPV virus.......Some one help. All this and thats.......this is kinda scary. has anyone gone through this? has anyone had an abnormal pap? does anyone have the HPV virus. This is so hard to deal with.

At least half of the population has HPV. While it's not ideal by any means, it's not uncommon. My doctor discovered it on my cervix and I had the abnormal cells frozen off about 16 years ago; I have never had an abnormal Pap since then.

It is fairly rare that the cells turn into cancer, but for that reason, make sure that you get your Pap smears done regularly.

I know it's scary; but stay on top of your exams and always use a condom.

Condoms don't really protect against HPV very well. I think any sexual contact can bring about contraction of HPV, testicles etc.

Do use condoms tho, they are good for protecting against other types of STDs.

Agreed - but use a condom anyway.

I am dealing with the exact same thing...... atypical cervix cells

My first abnormal pap smear was back at the end of last year (in Oct I do believe) - my 2nd abnormal pap smear was in Jan 08, so now I am going in for the 3rd test followed by a HPV test for Cancer on May 1, 2008... My doctor thinks I might have cervical cancer and if that is the case we are going to talk about me having a hysterectomy since I had my last child 18 years ago, therefore, I no longer need that darn uterus.

Actually, the research on whether condom use lowers the risk of HPV is unknown at this time. But we do know that condom use lowers the risk of cervical cancer.

As a general rule, the more severe the abnormal cell change, the greater the risk of cancer. We divide HPV (which is actually over 100 viruses) into high-risk and low-risk viruses. The high-risk viruses are the ones that are likely to produce greater cell changes and thus greater risk of cancer.

That being said, what is know, is that even women who have been infected with high-risk HPV and have greater abnormal cells are still very unlikely to actually be diagnosed with cervical cancer.

If you are at risk and have been infected with HPV, stop smoking. Smoking also increases your risk.
