Hi. I'm really worried that I'm going to pass either Bipolar, Borderline PD or both onto my daughter. It really worries me and I don't know what to do. Should i talk to my doctor about this?? Or wait until I get a new psychologist?? Thanks

You don't pass on diseases, just possibly inherited traits that might make one more vulnerable to them than the average person. On the other hand, you will pass on some traits that make a child better able to cope with other stresses than the norm. It is the job of a parent to try to make allowances in raising a child to maximize strengths and minimize vulnerabilities. You can do a lot; it is not just "fate".
Just my take on the matter.

Our children are people in their own rights also...they also have the ablity to work through anything dysfunctional they may have endured during childhood...none of us are perfect, but we also are more than our "labels"..as long as we remain open and willing to change then things will work out ok.

Genetics are a crap shoot any way you slice it. The best advice I’ve ever gotten is that worrying about something does not change the thing, it only drains your energy. Easier said than done I know. I don’t think it would be out of order to discuss this with your doctor just to get a list of things to be on the look out for.

I so know how you feel. My son has been on various anti-depressants and mood disorder medication for almost 4 years. I knock myself in the head EVERYDAY blaming myself for his illnesses. He's only 10, so of course I KNOW its my fault...no one elses. The doctors try to explain it differently, but it all works out the same.
The good news is he and I have a very wonderful relationship. He's extremely bright for his age, and we talk about our illnesses and medication anytime and anywhere. I never want him to feel ashamed, or "weird" (one of his words). Its ok now, and I know it will only get better! Good luck, Dee

I worry too, about what I may pass onto my children. It's so tough to think they may face the same problems as we do...

I'm nervous to about having kids and passing on OCD and/or panic disorder? Just wanted to reiterate that you're not alone.
