My 9yr old daughter has very hairy legs, allbeit blonde hair. She keeps telling me that she needs to shave, I tell her no. However, I remember what it was like for the kids at school to tease me because my legs were super hairy too. The difference is that I was in middle school, not going into 4th grade. How old do you all think a girl should start shaving? How old were you when you started shaving?

I was only allowed to start shaving when I was 13. I think that is a fair age to allow a girl to start shaving. 9 is too young in my opinion.

I personally don't think that age matters too much in this case, but when the girl starts to get long hair. My sister started shaving at 11 because she developed faster than me. I started at 13. If your daughter is really embarassed about her legs, and kids are going to be teasing her, I would personally let her shave.

My daughter is nine and I would of said no way however, a friend of ours has a daughter one year older than mine and she is extreamly mature for her age she has also started her period. If she was my daughter I would allow it.
I guess I am saying it depends on the maturity of the child ie if she is old enough for it to bother her then she is old enough to shave. I would buy her an electric lady shaver and show her how to use it. Or Immac and wash it off with a flannel either or. |

If the hair is obvious and it bothers her, I say let her shave.
Helping a young girl to have more confidence in her appearance can only be of benefit I think. There aren't too many cons to shaving once you learn how.

I would say let her or maybe use Nair. I have 9 year old step-daughters. One of them is developing much faster than her sister. I have been debating on showing her how to shave b/c the hair is getting long. However she hasn't said anything about it. I've decided if she asks me how to shave I'll show her, or if I hear that she is being made fun of. At 7, we had to start getting her deodorant, and she is developing pimples and so now we have her using face wash.

I would say if she's old enough to handle a razor and the hair bothers her, what is the big deal? I do not recall ever getting permission to shave, it's not a topic I discussed with my mother.
I do remember when I was 11 or 12 I had a friend spend the night. I was in the bathing, happened to be shaving my legs with a real razor, not one of those safety razors they have now. My friend asked through the door where something was, I turned my head to respond, the razor went crooked with my head and took off an 8 inch strip of skin. I couldn't get it to stop bleeding and her older sister brought over her father's shaving stick. That HURT, I would never recommend that! I have a scar to this day.

Normally I'd advise a nine year old to wait until she got a bit older to start. My sister just turned ten and I gave her a very brief guide to shaving awhile back since she was curious. It's unnecessary for her to do it now though, so she's waiting 'til puberty.
However, if your daughter is starting to grow more hair than she feels comfortable with, then I suppose she could start shaving now. At that age I'd wonder if it might be a kid fad, and if she's being bullied then that's another area entirely that needs addressing. However, we don't all develop at the same rates and I know some of my sister's friends are already entering the early stages of puberty. So in your kid's case, I wouldn't be totally against the idea. It's really more of a personal thing at this point. |

I don't think there's a particular age, just whenever the need to shave is noticeable or she feels uncomfortable, embarassed or made fun of about it.
I started shaving around 11-12, but needed to at 10. I didn't want to "grow up." lol |

Well my K started complaining about the long hairs on her leg and then started to RIP them out. So I bought Veet cream. I sat with her in the bathroom and we used the cream on her knees and below. Then she got to use a little plastic "razor" (scraper) and "shave" the cream and hair off. It worked very well and she was happy with the smooth legs. I am not ready to hand a real razor to a 9 yr old. And the Veet seemed to work. I am glad she came to me about it. I couldn't just sit by and do nothing while she PULLED the hair out of her legs!
