I committed suicide 6 months ago. I was on 72 hour hold at a psychiatry floor. I am currently being treated with medication and have been slowly recovering from such experience.
I am trying to get my life back on track. After this traumatic experience I've done to my family and thinking of leaving my family for any kind of death haunted me. So I decided to get a life insurance. Not to plan another suicide but to insure my family in case of death caused by other events. I met with a agent and finished my application. No such question about my mental health was asked at the time of application in person. But recently I had a phone interview regards to my medical history. I did release my medial history as part of HIPPA accountability as part of my application. I understand that I am giving the insurance company permission to review my medical history. I was told that my stay due to 50 51 hold ( Involuntary hold) after suicide attempt will not be on my medical history. I admitted about having depression and currently being treated but... When the interviewer asked me if I had suicide attempts. I froze and said " No." Questions got rather too personal so I refused to answer some of the questions the interviewer was asking. If they have complete clearance to my medical records why are these people phone interviewing me regards to my health condition? Does mental health condition such as 50 51 hold ( Involuntary hold after hard to oneself) go on my medical records? Why did my nurse at the psychiatry floor tell me it's completely confidential when it's not? ( assuming MIB will show 50 51 hold) Any advice or input is greatly appreciated. |

If you used medical insurance to pay for it there will be a record on your medical records. I don't think if you payed privately that it would be on your records.

If you are not truthful on a life ins application, the company can deny coverage later and/or consider it a disqualification due to a preexisting condition. Most apps also require disclosure of hospitalizations and medications you are an/ or havetaken.

Sometimes you can get life insurance. But I think they won't touch you if the attempt was recent. Also, there is normally a clause added that they will either not pay out for a suicide or that here is a time limit (such as 3 years) from the time the policy is in effect, and you had to have been under a doctor's care at the time you suicided.
I can't get insurances because of health reasons. What I want to do is take the money I would have spent on the insurance, and pre-pay my funeral expenses. That way, you will go with the planning of your wishes and not someone who is guessing at what you want. Or having problems collecting insurance, regardless of how you die. JMHO |

shortandcute, I think the OP meant to say attempted suicide. The the OP, if you used insurance, it will probably be in your medical records--at least the hospital stay would be, not sure about the 51-50.

I was given a copy of my medical information before my SSDI hearing. The information was released from hospital to SS.
