(1) My only income is Social Security Disability for a serious psychiatric illness.
(2) I don't have Medicaid. (3) A saw a room for rent on Craigslist. I telephoned the owner to ask about renting that room. The owner asked, "What do you do for a living?" I answered, "I don't work. I'm on disability." The owner then asked, "What are you on disability for?" I answered, "I'd rather not say." He then said that he would not rent to me. (4) It seems to me that apartment and room renters don't want people (especially men) who are viewed as "crazy" and therefore dangerous. Do you have any suggestions? |

I'm not working right now, due to addiction and mental health issues. My only income is from pension plan withdrawals and I'm not allowed to withdraw much. My roommate is on gov't disability for schizophrenia. We decided to live together and rent a 2 bedroom when we met and lived in a homeless shelter. Together we could just afford a two bedroom.
We got turned down at one place, but got into a really nice, well maintained building, but we had to provide a guarantor to cosign the lease. Fortunately one of my friends has a good job, and was willing. If you have a friend who's working that might make finding a place to live easier. splitimage |

If you are capable and willing you may be able to organize and coordinate some type of co-op to find/establish housing opportunities for people in similar situations.

I think it is totally illegal for a landlord or almost any professional in that matter to ask why you are on disability.

Isn't it against the law to ask the nature of your disability? I don't think they can deny you the right to rent based on your collecting disability. You should look into this.

I would go through a reputable rental agency/property and not expect much from Craigslist and individuals I don't know.
