I was living with my now ex for the last almost 6 years. We broke up a few months ago. I'm on ssi and I get the max since I moved into my moms house but I can't stay there because there's just not room. It's a smallish 3 bedroom house. My mom and dad sleep in different rooms and my sister lives at home. She's 20 with two toddlers. Even at the cheapest I can find here, a studio at $410, I would still have barely any money for basics or even food after paying for rent, bills and meds. I have schizoaffective disorder and my family isn't understanding and just mak everything worse and it's incredibly stressful to live there because everyone constantly yells, *****es, the kids don't listen to me, etc.

I don't want a roommate. In fact, I don't think my paranoia would let me have a roommate and my only friend that I could move out with has a place. So it's just me. I can't afford even those extended stay motels.

What about dorms? Can I apply for student loans and use that to pay for a dorm? I do plan to go to college just wasn't planning on living on campus.

I'm 22. Is there any other programs that can help me pay for a place since I'm on ssi or something?

They have apartments around here for disabled or elderly that are 30% of income. Not sure about Texas. Do you have a DHS case manager that could help? Dorms aren't private I think. You would have a roommate.

I've look at apartment guides with apartments with income limitations. Are those the one where you pay 30%? Are you positive you don't need a section 8 voucher for those apartments?

And as for dorms, some let you rent the other bed so you can have a private room.

Not familiar with section 8. They advertise in the paper as for disabled or elderly 30% of adjusted income in my state.

You can't get student loans solely for housing you have to actually be a student attending that school and you also wouldn't qualify for loans to cover both beds in a dorm .

I know student loans don't cover just housing. I was planning to take classes half time.

I believe you have to take a full course load to qualify for a student loan. They want the money to go to education, not private dorm rooms.

I found an apartment that had the income restrictions, but it wasn't anything other than exactly that. You couldn't make more than a certain amount to live there.
There's nothing other than section 8 here and they aren't accepting applications and it takes some people years just to get housing.

There's some non profit, but all I can find is to help you pay on your existing rent, utilities, etc.
I'd sleep on this nasty floor before going to a homeless shelter.

I have a new boyfriend, he lets me stay at his house with his mom and step dad, but I only stay 3 days max because we barely just got together and it's really nice of him, but I need my private, alone time. It's moving from an extremely stressful house to just stressful. So it's a nice change but I can't keep just staying with him.

Have you tried going through Goodwill? Depending on where you are at, Goodwill gives housing assistance, including even rent assistance in some areas. If not directly, they can be a big help in connecting you with services and organizations that can help you. I had a co-worker years and years ago that was really struggling and was living out of her car for several weeks and Goodwill really helped her out.

I can find programs in the my area, but they're all in the city I'm not in and I can't live in another city that's even close because I rely on a bus for transportation to my doctors appointment and stuff for disabled and elderly people and they don't have a solid, similar program like that in the surrounding cities, so I would have no transportation anywhere. They have "Need a ride" programs, but it's not like the one I have that is constant and not just to doctors. The one here also take me to the store to buy groceries, school, recreation time, etc. Plus my doctor is here. And my only family. So I have to find something in this city.

I think the only option I have is to just sleep on the floor in the extremely stressful house until section 8 opens and hope to everything that I get accepted.

Try the want ads for roommates needed. Or craigslist for roommates needed. A lot of times you can get a nice situation of someone who has a nice place and just needs someone to rent out a room. Just have someone go with you. Don't go on viewings alone.

@thewall, I don't think I could have a roommate. My paranoia at is bad enough as it is. I can't even imagining trying to live with a stranger. That just freaks me out.

I know you really don't want a roommate.. But if you cant find something you can afford all on your own , you may just have to have a roommate anyway.

Can you imagine living with a stranger more than you can imagine sleeping on the floor where you are, or being homeless? They won't be a stranger for long if you live with them.

does your doctor or therapist have any ideas? sometimes they know about resources that aren't widely advertised...

Try the roommate situation. Interview them so to speak before signing up. Look for someone with similar interests and gender.

The worst case is it doesn't work out and you move. Read everything they ask you to sign - usually it's the standard lease agreement and house rules. And you never know! It could turn out that you've just now made a friend for life!! It has happened!

But being homeless is not an option and living with BFs prematurely is not either if you can help it.
